Air spring replacement

If one needed replacement, would folks recommend replacing the pair ? MY11 4.4 with 100k miles.
Not cheap to have done at a main dealer, so just thinking whether replacing just the defective air spring is the right thing to do ......

On my TD6 I changed both although only one was defective. The consensus is that if one has gone the other won't be far behind.

I would change both. John

Change both, dont use Land Rover parts, use a good independent to fit them or do it yourself. The air bags themselves are circa £150 each from the likes of Island 4x4, OE quality, I fitted mine in about 1.5 hrs per side, on the drive with no ramp. BMW i3 Electric Car

Best to do in pairs, as others have said. Don’t want uneven handling side to side.

If ones gone, the remaining one won’t be far behind….

Just to follow up

I used genuine LR part
https://www.lrparts.net/lr032567-front-air...mping.html

£980 + vat.
Duckworth’s discount take some of the sting out of list price on parts.

Didn’t want to do job myself, Indy explained bolts were prone to seizure on the air spring mountings.
Manual states torque numbers up to 250nm. I don’t have a torque wrench that big.

2.5 hours labour, including time quoted for and needed for seized bolts.

Maybe the genuine macpherson struts are over priced.
I try where possible to only use genuine spares / replacement parts.
The original ones lasted more than 10 years.

Other side air spring is reported to be in good condition. No urgency in getting it changed.

Shocked - Makes a case for taking a chance on a 3.6 turbo and pre facelift non adaptive suspension……
Lots of 4.4’s on the used market with around 100k miles on the clock ( and “oil mist on shock absorber” on the MOT advisory)

I changed both when one was finished, I changed both complete struts at home on ramps, took 30mins per side, looking at the one I could have left and it looked like it would only have lasted another few weeks if that, it was almost threadbare and waiting to go pop
Very easy to do, I budgeted at least half a day, just over an hour with tools away and done 2009 (2010 MY) 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography

The accepted wisdom on here is to change both at the same time. I didn't and 5 years later things are still going strong; on both sides.

It's usually the front left that goes first somehow.
Better to change them together as the RHS one will go bad very quickly after owing to age and imbalance due to LHS being new and RHS one many years old.

So totally worth doing them together with good quality parts and relax for years.

Just done this. Broke the torque wrench in the process.
How on earth do you get the strut bolts to 250Nm?

You had better not attempt to R&R the crankshaft pulley if 250 Nm is problematic!

Mine goes to 210 so did it to that and then a bit more with my longer breaker bar. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

These bad boys;

In my case they took some serious effort to remove, ended up with a 5ft steel bar on the breaker just to get them to move then a large lump hammer to get them out. Whatever you do get new bolts, do not refit the old ones. Yours being newer might not be so bad, the Rimmer Bros YouTube video is very good and is on the same type as yours.

Don’t worry about the torque, they are simply very tight. Most torque wrenches will be within a small margin of what is needed, just go another “argh” after that.
