Soot levels in a PDF ?

Hi everyone
I’ve learned on here thankfully that the yellow warning re the PDF can be cleaned even at a “24.reading before the dreaded RED”. However does anyone know if there’s a “minimal reading “ necessary before the burn as well as the quarter full tank needed.
My reading today is 19.3 so not a problem yet but living in Somerset with the country roads etc. would be great to know if a burn can be achieved when convenient to hit the motorway. I did get a run on the M5 a few weeks ago but with lane closures both up and down it only reduced the soot level from 24.4 ish to 13 before the return home.
Either motor junction is about 10 miles from me and a planned event be a good option if that would be possible. I know too many short runs but what a L322 V8TD is!!

DPF, mine starts an Active regen at 19.2g once it gets to temperature at a steady 50mph 👍

I have to confess that I also occasionally resort to giving it a forced regen with my Gap iid when a convenient shorter trip is planned.
I don’t like uncompleted Active regents because of oil fuel dilution issues.

Yes it’s a problem I have with an annual mileage at about 5000 miles a year and gaps between use. Without taking the iigap readings in between things the warnings can appear when you would rather they didn’t. You can’t have everything when you’re retired but how did we manage to go to work?

Hi Mike taking your point on carrying out a forced regeneration using the gap tool, can you outline the basic steps needed please? I’ve had my car a number of years now but following a recent issue with a restricted performance issues caused by a disconnected booster pipe and the yellow warning at the “same time “ that would be a useful thing to be aware of.
Fortunately the local garage sorted the pipe issue out ok but the gap option gives some piece of mind if necessary. M5 was at a standstill again the day before yesterday after another accident making the forced regeneration an option when necessary.

17.46g Amber Warning Off
21.25g Red Warning Off


Regen starts at 37mph. I can trigger it by going over 37mph a few seconds then mine will regen in traffic or even when stopped down to about 16g.

Not every regen will get you a low reading. I think all of us at some point have over-worried with DPF anxiety due to watching the numbers...

It is best to just ignore it unless you have a problem - I have to tell myself that a lot!

I wouldn't use a forced regen to acheive 'feel-good' soot levels. It's a last resort option and has a potential to cause permenant damage. If you are getting regular amber warnings even with sub-optimal driving cycles it's likley you have other issues which need investigating. Not convinced partial or aborted regens cause oil dilution either or that oil dilution is a real problem on the 4.4TDV8 esp if you do 5k oil changes which seem to be the consensus with most owners. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Many thanks for your input L322 and JG. I appreciate the figures quoted explaining the general parameters of the natural regeneration process. I recently experienced an episode of “restricted performance while also at the amber PDF level”. The restricted performance was caused by a loose return booster pipe (which caused the evidence of oil on the drive) “and” the lack of power here in the hills around here.
This combination of circumstances resulted in the question re put your foot down to start the regeneration needed or put it back into restricted performance by doing so? Fortunately the local garage checked the car for the oil leak and found booster pipe issue solving the RP problem. I was then able to get to a straight run and clear some soot.
Good to know therefore that all’s well and that I will be able to get a normal regeneration done when needed without causing havoc to traffic locally. I agree best not to become an addict to checking the soot levels although living in the countryside here does limit the prospect of a good run on a day to day basis.

I've been in the quite countryside of central Ireland for the last few weeks and doing a lot of local driving on very 'local' roads where the speed limit is 30/50mph and not had an amber warning and when I looked at my soot levels and regen count it's regenerating as normal. In 3 years of ownership I've never seen even an amber warning light. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Enjoy your trip in the countryside and regenerations will occur unknowingly. I have had a red appear though without warning in the past once and either isn’t a problem as long as you able to have a clear run when it occurs. To be sure the biggest problem is when you are faced with the Restricted Performance issue.

Plenty of advice on here though if that raises its head Whistle
