L405 SDV8 Oil in the plenum etc. Help!

Hi everyone.

Had the dreaded restricted performance message appear on my well maintained 2013 144k mile SDV8 L405, just as I was about to prepare it to sell - typical!

Checked the code and reading P006A-00, removed sensors, cleaned, replaced ran OK until second turbo kicks in, then same limp mode.
Ended up removing plenum, throttle body, EGR pipe etc as they were caked in heavy soot/oil - very nasty...
Anyway put back together nice and clean, cleared codes, drove 2 miles, but exactly same problem.
Investigated again and the throttle body/sensor etc had a fresh layer of oil over the insides. Sad

Any suggestions as to where this oil may be coming from please as im sure this must be the problem??

Much appreciated.

Thankyou

Neil.

Have you just changed the oil filter by any chance?

No, but it had a service not that long ago, probably done 1000 miles since.
Is this relevant maybe?

There is a chance that the oil filter drain valve may have come off it's post underneath the filter. Worth taking the filter out and having a look. Thumbs Up

Interesting... How does this lead to excessive oil getting into the throttle body / intake pipework, etc? New one on me? <<--- BTW, this is a genuine question! Thumbs Up

I don't realy know to be honest. Someone on here did explain what happens if it's misplaced.
My car started using a lot of oil and smoking out the exhaust. It was diagnosed as needing 2 new turbo's at about £7000.
I found mine had come off it's post. After refitting it has not used a drop of oil since and no more smoke and I still have £7000.
What I did notice before finding the problem was that the MAP sensor was soaking wet instead of dry and powdery. Thumbs Up

Thanks Kevin, Thumbs Up

Will do a search for that post, as I'd love to know how incorrect oil filter installation leads to oil getting into the intake system? I'm speculating it's via a breather if the top of the engine is filling up with oil?

I wonder how many people have shed out an awful lot of money on unnecessary repairs, when the fix may be as simple as the oil filter not being seated correctly on its post?

It's not that the oil filter is not correctly installed, it's the drain back valve that comes off it's locating post.

To be fair the car gave all the symptoms of blown turbo's.
I discovered the problem of the valve becoming detatched and nobody seems to have mentioned before that this can happen.
That's why I say to always check it is firmly in place before installing a new filter.
Thumbs Up

Gotcha! So that being dislodged, would lead to the oil filter housing draining down when the engine stopped, leading to a slightly longer time to get oil pressure when starting the engine.

Not bunging up the housing drain hole must cause an excess of oil somewhere else (when the engine is running), where it must then find its way into the intake system; via possibly a crankcase vent?

Rover V8's used to have this problem (especially on track with lateral G's), where the oil couldn't get back from the heads to the sump quickly enough, leading to it going out through the breather system and being ingested into the intake system. I got black flagged at Mallory Park for this very reason, with a smoke screen behind me, James Bond style! Made a temporary oil catch tank out of a thermos flask and back out for the next session!

Turns out that the plenum had split along the seam slightly causing an air leak. Not sure if this was there before or if I damaged it cleaning to be honest...

I thought I was clever, opened up the seam a bit with a Dremel, cleaned and filled with epoxy plastic padding which I used before with great success as it goes rock solid. Alas, twas not to be, within 5 minutes it had blown apart again so I now definitely need a new one.

Looking around they seem to be £600-£700 unless anybody has another solution maybe??

Cheers

Neil.

Chain rivet the seam with pop rivets or self tapping screws. The turbo hits just under 1.5bar above atmospheric so quite a lot of pressure.
