4.4 TDV8 Turbo Oil Drain Mod £££

Hi everyone, new here.

I’ve got an L322 4.4 TDV8 and I’m getting the dreaded big cloud of white/blue smoke when I give it some beans over 2500rpm. Clear to me the issue is the oil drain for turbo unless I’m wrong.

Let’s go with the fact it is that does anyone recommend any garages in or around Hampshire? My normal LR specialist has never done one so I feel I’d rather take somewhere thats had the experience of doing it. How much am I looking at money wise for that job?

The car only poodles around and doesn’t get booted much at all and I never normally get it over 2000rpm on my daily drives. When I do however get it over 2500rpm the smoke I get from behind is horrendous. After doing that and trying again on the same journey it’s no where near as bad but you can still see a tinge of smoke.

Am I left with having to just do that mod or does anyone else have any other suggestions.

I can drive perfectly well for months without needing to use more than 2500rpm. Others say boot it everytime you take it out and you will not get a cloud as there is no buildup. Recent evidence suggests the oil filter housing oil release valve is the real culprit and not the oil drain for the turbo so do a search on this as the fix is easy. Difficult to justify spending big money getting the 'official' fix when it's just a cosmetic issue that doesn't effect the cars running. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

As above, check the oil filter housing valve. Filter needs to be removed first

Way cheaper and safer than drilling into the sump.

Check the valve. If it’s faulty then fix and see if smoke goes.

Just a hypothetical question - if it could potentially be the oil filter housing, and the SDV8 in the L405 not suffering this issue, I don't see why you couldn't retrofit the SDV8 filter housing to the TDV8? 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

An alternative to “booting it” is to use the command shift paddles to change down until the revs go over 2500. It can be done on any reasonable A road. I’d suggest doing this once every couple weeks to spin up the second turbo and lube the seals. If after a couple of months you still get smoke ( and you’ve done the oil filter housing oil release valve ) then consider the drain mod… I understand the drain mod is quite expensive to do.

GlenRands near Liphook have a good reputation in the Hampshire area it may be worth discussing with them. TDV8 4.4 2012
