Realised why the bottom bushing wouldn't push out

So I've got that BMW subframe kit. Thought the receiver end would work.

It didn't. The 15 tonne hydraulic puller to the rescue as a faux press.

May as well just buy a press  Its actually a sport

question for when I get to installing the bearings.

unfortunately I don't have a plate big enough to support the wheel bearings when refitting.

I was thinking simply freeze the bearing and heat up the knuckle.

Then just tap it in using the old bearing on top, normally what I do for bikes, is that okay?

did what I could with the wire wheel of death and a dremel afterwards. a nice glug of neutrarust onto most of the knuckle.

i did put some on where the drive shaft goes which seems risky given the clearance, so might need to sand that back down. Its actually a sport

Hmm calipers needing refurbing as well.

To its credit, its seperated the shaft and knuckle, the hub from the shaft and got the wheel bearing out.

only downside of it is its heavy. which am guessing it has to be, but when your knackered and ill, the hooks kept catching on stuff and its heavy to stand up at times, it can be trying.

but when it works, its great

painting anything has to be up there. some pics of etch priming the bracket.

think ill wait for the sandblaster before I do the caliper to really get it super clean.

think ill attempt an install of the wheel bearing tomorrow after i paint the knuckle today.

the hammerite got on there well enough should have maybe tapped off any holes but what ya gonna do.

manage to tap in the bearing as well. seemed to work fine, just very time consuming as opposed to a nice press

i also pressed in the hub. which was stupid of me, absolutely stupid. i shouldnt have because i needed to wait for the stupid brake disc guard... Its actually a sport

Is it possible to "modify" the brake guard, i.e. cut a bit out to be able to fit it afterwards, I have done this for the front brake disk guards but I have not looked if you can also do it for the rears.

well shes stripped down again to just a separate hub and knuckle with 1 bearing destroyed.

it was miles easier this time, am unsure if thats because am more familiar with the tool(somewhat am sure), or the amount of grease i used just in case it ever had to come out again.

the race remover was handy, but it looks like it could lose its sharpness pretty quickly. but to its credit, the hub is still immaculate. if anything am that its slightly started to rust from the freezing.

for someone that knows, can I use a bigger diameter plate to push in the next bearing than the size of the bearing? or will that put force onto the center as well? Its actually a sport

well thats one knuckle almost sorted,

all bushings in and new wheel bearing in.

the subframe removal tool had a plate that I could use to "press" it in and hold from the other side. i wasnt particularly comfortable with the plate directly onto the new bearing so i used the recently broken bearing as an intermediate to ensure only the outer rings had pressure.

worked well enough and much easier than setting up the press.

just waiting for dust guard now and the hub can be put back in. i guess this weekend ill see if i can strip the control arms/toe link off the car.

the main worry is i can't get the impact to a lot of them so its going to be a manual hassle Its actually a sport

while waiting on bits and bobs decided to start the rear subframe bushings. only did left side

the tool in the pics worked well as long as you dont use any impact tools. just a 24mm racket spanner will do

i however decided to yolo it, strip the threads and regret life.

so with that i used a spare M16 bar from a different kit and an adjustable spanner, it was a ballache. death by like 50 million turns.

along with that the right side rear right screw seems to be having trouble screwing in again good chance it stripped since it dropped at one point.

looking at the screw it seems to be cutting new threads so best not risk it and properly cut some fresh threads, or ideally just hook up the damaged threads to the existing ones.

I did use the Meyle HD 300 bushings. I guess if they wear prematurely I do the job again but tbh it wasn't that big a job, its actually surprisingly easy.

although one point of concern is that the bushes bottomed out in the tool without be 100% in. how much difference that makes we'll see. Its actually a sport
