EPB and MOT... ?

An ongoing EPB fault is concerning me as I have an MOT due in May.
Local specialist is quoting £1200+ for EPB replacement.

Will the lack of EPB fail the MOT?

Yep it's gonna fail that. If fitted it has to work and you have to have some form of handbrake.

Shop around, you could get breaker parts and a sympathetic indie to do it for less, depends what's gone with it.

Thanks for the replies gents.



The Garage couldnt 'see' a wiring fault on last inspection although a full trace wasn't done.

The EPB just doesnt work at all.

On starting the car it Triggers a large red triangle on the dash which you can clear but leaves a small flashing red triangle on the speedo.

If you try activate it/deactivate the EPB whilst in park I get a double bong and the red triangle warning again.

No sign of U2002 yet on code scan (wiring fault)

If not done already, it may be worth checking the condition of the parking brake shoes / pivots / adjusters / return springs etc and that the actuating cables are free to move at the pivot end.

If these have become rusted, which is common, they may have seized and the EPB motor is unable to drive the shoes in / out.

If this does prove to be the issue, likely to be a cheaper / simpler fix than replacing the module. Jonathan

Can the cables stretch?
My EPB works, but didnt hold the car at all.
The indi stripped everything down and checked the discs and shoes and said that they were at 50%.
After the work, the EPB will hold the car, but only after rolling forward a little and then it "sits down" on the rear.
It did pass the MOT though. ---------------------------------

Assuming the shoes still have enough material on them and the inner surface of the disc that they operate against is not heavily scored, it may just be a case of adjusting the shoes.

I believe it’s 8 clicks back on the adjuster screw from fully applied. Jonathan
