Headlamp washer fluid brown / rusty

Hi folks

The washer fluid coming out of my headlamp washers is brown and makes a mess of the bumper and bonnet. Other than the colour of the fluid, the washers work fine. I think the rest of the car is fine also, i.e. front and rear screen wash is a normal colour.

If it were sediment in the bottle, surely it would affect all circuits. Does anyone have any thoughts on the source of the discolouration and how to fix it?

Thanks, Rob. '07 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8

Could be te pump. You can easily replace it by getting acccess through the NS wheel arch by unfastening the liner at the front. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Thanks JayGee. Found them online and only £20, so I'll have a go at that some time and report back. '07 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8

As above, plus, whilst there is one washer fluid reservoir, there are three pumps for the washer fluid, the pump for the headlights is a higher pressure pump, and if I am correct, the headlight washer pump works every fifth time you operate the windscreen wash ( or thereabouts ) so water sits in the pump for longer. There could be some corrosion in this pump, try flushing it through first. It is not a big job to remove the pump. As for opening the pump, it's probably a sealed unit, not expensive to change the pump. The below video will give you more info

The high pressure pump is for HID equipped cars i.e without headlight wipers. Not sure what year HID came in. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Thanks everyone for the responses and great information. Looking at the video Merchy posted, the pump being removed in the video had a lot of rust around the bottom, so I suspect I have the same issue. '07 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8

Hi all

Apologies for the long delay in responding. I replaced the pump, eventually, and have left it a couple of months to flush out the pipes, but the issue remains. Think I'll try back-flushing the pipes from the nozzles next, if I can, and see if that fixes it. Failing that, I'll see if I can flush in the normal direction.

Hope you are all having a good bank holiday!

Cheers, Rob. '07 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8

I'd flush out the tank and also check the other pumps are not failing and contaminating the fluid. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
