Just catching up on some of the conversations and spotted this one - Interestingly, i've been saying for some time that the headlights (both dip and main beam) on my 2016 L405 are not where near as bright as the ones on my previous L322.

They are not the LED matrix lights (sadly) but are the rest of them all the same - (ie how can I tell which bulbs i need for mine as a direct replacement/upgrade) Ash

Similar to lots on this thread, I was disappointed to find 2014 L405 headlights worse than my outgoing 2010 L322 headlights. In particular, the light on the kerb/verge was quite poor.

Ahead of discovering this thread I’d done some fiddling and found a new pair of D3S xenon bulbs, correctly fitted* brought the L405 headlights up to L322 standards.

The bulbs that came out were original, so nigh on ten years old and the replacements were nothing fancy - Neolux from Amazon.


*I found the LHS headlight bulb not fully seated in the housing - the L405’s ‘spiders legs’ and clamp are not as positive in placing the bulb as the much simpler L322 clamps. Pushing the bulb in and clamping fully made a big improvement to LHS light output alone.

So I bit the bullet...

Eagerly await the arrival of the OPL5 D3S LED Headlight Bulbs (as per the link from Pheonix on the 1st page of this thread)

Will update once they are fitted - I'm guessing its only a 15 min job to replce the bulbs. Ash

it would be 15 mins if you didnt have to remove the air ducts on each side to get to the back of the headlight unit.. .. ... - .- -.

UPDATE:

These are still going strong 2-1/2 months later, and only £14.00 each now, the light output is phenomenal compared with the original or even upgraded Osram HIDs.
IMHO, much of the stuff on eBay is just the same as AE, plus the Resellers mark-up.

I’m going to order another pair now as spares.

I think all the high-output LEDs will have fans, due to the heat output, is that right?
The headlight enclosures don’t seem to get unduly warm, even after a long night drive, having said that plenty of “wind chill” out there currently!  “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Hi,

It's a real pain, I have artificial lenses after cataract surgery and the "starburst" effect for me from LED lights at night is a bit of a problem.

Still looking for some kind of night driving glasses that cover that but so far nothing I've tried is any good.

I also see rainbows in my periferal vision from street lights, but not sure if that's the spliff I had or just me.

The problem with retrofit LED lights is people installing them into reflector headlights. I added LED bulbs to my mom’s Toyota Sienna van that comes with projector halogen headlights. The cutoff is crisp, they are aimed correctly, and the light output is phenomenal.

I will not replace my wife’s Subaru HID bulbs as they are in HID reflector headlights and will cause glare. The pickups with retrofits or OEM LEDs are an issue when a leveling kit (front 1.5” lift) is installed AND the headlight aiming is not adjusted.

Cataracts would be a pain no matter what. Thats tough. Dan. 🇨🇦 2013 L405 5.0 SCV8

Just fitted a set of the aliexpress bulbs. First impressions are they feel brighter than the outgoing ones which are likely about 9 years old now. Definitely a green tint to the light compared to the warmer hid.
