Yes, very good point, agreed this is a common bugbear with me
Mine are also VERY slow to clear, there’s ZERO information in either the WM or UM on this feature, but it seems the mirror heating is only for “defrost” not “demist”, so only kicks in at very low temperatures, (with the rear screen heater on).

Very frustrating at this time of year when it’s cold/wet or heavy overnight condensation leaving the mirrors useless. (Perhaps lazy yes, but in a £100K+ when new vehicle, one should not have to dither about with warm wash leathers at 6am wiping off mirrors, etc.)
I’d much prefer a manual switch, as on many cars, I’ve had various German cars where the mirrors would literally steam off the water in a minute or two on a cold morning.
As usual, JLR know better than everyone else!

Maybe some enterprising aftermarket supplier will invent “hot” mirrors, to sell by the ten thousand? “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Warranty replaced the entire mirror on my last 405 and that mirror used to warm up much quicker than the older existing mirror... As you say above, this one would steam on a crisp cold morning... So I would suggest, time and constant use wear the heater elements out?!?

Try looking for new old stock on fleabay?

Could be with most FFRR’s living outdoors due to tiny UK domestic garage dimensions, that inevitable contact corrosion increases resistance and decreases heat? Only guessing, but maybe a strip-down and burnish of contacts/SG200 treatment might improve things?

How to do that? I’m clueless  “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

I thought the mirrors were live whenever the car was running? Might be worth a meter check and see if they are or weather they are live’d up through the heated rear window circuit?

Hi Craig, I eventually found this in the WM:

EXTERIOR MIRROR HEATING TIMES
On-time Percentage 100% 75% 50% 25% 0% 0%
On vehicles with the parked heating function, exterior mirror heating may also operate when the parked heating function is active, depending on the ambient air temperature.

Ambient Air Temperature in °C (°F)
< -10 (<14> 35 (>95) = 0%

So, above 0 deg C, you lose 25% of heating effect! Trouble is, the the JLR Numptys didn’t realise it takes almost 7x more energy to evaporate water as it does to melt ice!

Schoolboy Physics, for cold damp conditions say from 10C to 0C you stiil need maximum heating!

My L322 used to have steam coming off them. My L405 doesn't, but it only takes a couple of minutes or so to clear them. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black

Well, my missus had an Evoque before the fullfat (which did fit in the garage), so rather than get it out of it’s “bed” she frequently just borrowed my truck. Now having the FF on the driveway, her mileage has doubled , but my tank stays full  “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

I scoured the owners manual online and there is basically no mention of the heated function of the mirrors
