Coolant appears low but no warnings

Hi all,

My new (to me) RR 2006 4.4 AJV8 was recently in at Glenrands for a health check. Great guys and operation over there. The RR got a clean bill of health aside from the fact there was no thermostat installed. It was removed by the previous owner to troubleshoot an issue with lack of fan heat and I guess they forgot to re-install it. Anyway, a new genuine thermostat was installed by Glenrands and the car is running great as it did before I took it in, not overheating, no dash warnings or error messages.

Today I was installing an OEM spec front grill (to replace an aftermarket one) and noticed the coolant level looks very low. I'm not getting a low coolant warning in the car.

Should I just top it up as normal?

Oh dear, how can I check if the sensor has been disabled? I have an IID tool.

It may need to be lower to trigger the warning. I lost coolant the other week, and stopped as soon as the message came on, but it did look like the level was lower than that.

With IID tool you can able/disable that, can´t really member the route to find it, but it´s in the CCF. Just wonder around and you will find it. -07 Stornoway Gray TDV8

Undo the expansion tank bleed screw and take off the bottle cap, and watch the level rise in the bottle. If it settles between the fill lines, all is well.

If your level sensor is faulty, it is likely to throw up the error on your dashboard anyway. The level sensor is quite low down in the tank, because that's exactly what the tank is - an expansion tank.

There is enough space to feel down and check the multiplug is connected. You can see the sensor through the plastic, so if the level was higher than the sensor, you wouldn't have got the 'Coolant Level Low' message.

As Fanders has suggested, I'd try bleeding first. If Glenrands have replaced the thermostat, there may be some residual air trapped in the system that's worked its way through to the highest point (the expansion tank). You may also find the pressure release cap could need replacing. Then top up as required.

Thanks all for your responses!

As if by magic, I loosened the bleed screw and removed the tank cap and the coolant level rose, to just above the fill line (assume this is okay?)

I will leave the cap off / bleed screw open for a couple of hours (engine off/cold), reattach, then take the RR for a run to see what happens.
