Hi, I’m a new member to this. I bought a 2005 4.2 superchareged l322, the car came with good history loads of paperwork etc to show work done. The car drives fine but has this whining noise that has appeared when going from 30-50mph. Once i get it to 70mph its near enough gone, ive got it booked in to the garage bought thought i would see if anyone with same model has had the same issue?

Not sure, when its parked up the engine is quiet and when i build up the revs it doesn’t do it if thats what you mean, i was thinking a bearing at first. Ive pit new tyres on all round as i was told it could be that theres a flat spot due to the car being dry stored most of the year. At first i thought a bearing but was told that would get louder not stop at higher speeds. My thoughts now are maybe a drive shaft or something.

To rule out a bearing drive the car at 30 to 50 mph through a series of long left and right hand bends, if it's a bearing the noise will come and go as the bearings load up / unload, but this usually makes a droning noise.
Pulleys / belts / supercharger ? The garage could test drive the car using the so called mechanics ears to try to narrow it down, as there are multiple possible causes.

Thanks Merchy, i will try this and see what happens, i did think about the supercharger but when the car is ticking over the engine is so quiet and when it starts up cold it sounds fine. I do try and listen to the supercharger as i saw that it can make a knocking noise if a pin or something on it was bent? Ive had fast high performance turbos but this is my first supercharged so i could be wrong. I’m hoping the garage will know hes a good guy and hes ex conway LR head mechanic and hes always been on top of the other landys we have so fingers crossed.

At least it sounds like you have the right guy for the diagnosis, he will have lots of experience, hope its not a huge job

Can you tell where in the car the noise seems to be coming from?

Thanks merchy hopefully its a small bill! Erm Dhallworth once im in the 30-50mph range yea it stops when i left off the power then if i carry on past 50 it gets quieter then by 70mph its gone

1. If you’re between 30 and 50 accelerating or climbing a hill, does it make the noise?

2. Lifting off stops the noise?

3. Does the noise reappear when you get back on the power?

If the answers are:

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes

My suspicion would be a diff whining.

Fair play david you just described my car perfectly haha! I’m not sure if its the front or back i can hear the noise, i looked at the history on the car because to be fair to the last guy he gave me a bible of paperwork with it, it does say ouls were changed in the diffs. Just out of interest how much should i be looking at for a diff? Its not something ive had to do on my previous cars.
