Naughty Haylands, naughty......that's akin to kicking a man when he's down Now wiping up my coffee, from all over the kitchen counter

It deserves everything it has coming at the moment...

Okay so I've just been to my local used RR specialist dealer.

Explained my plight and they very kindly let me take a 2015 model 4.4 AB from their stock out for a drive.

The dealers car has 79k miles on the clock and is fitted with larger 22 inch wheels, continental cross contact tyres.

The car reported the tyre pressures as 33 psi front and 35 psi rear.

I planned a test route from the dealer and back again, first driving it in my car then swapping to the dealers car and repeating.

Here's my observations:

Suspension:

I could tell I had less side wall beneath me in the dealers car but overall it felt 'floatier' than mine and had longer travel to its suspension as in it felt like the shocks compressed more over bumps for better cushioning.

Steering:

The dealers car had lighter steering at parking speeds and when turning at a junction (main road to side road) the steering didn't feel like it was meeting resistance like mine does, it just flowed smoothly.

Engine:

The engine seemed quieter and more refineded, I did not notice a 'dullness' to the throttle as per my own and I found It difficult to stay at a target speed e.g. 30mph as the car seemed so eager, I ended up being over by 2-3 mph resulting in me backing off throttle.

At standstill when revving the engine it did not send notable vibration through the car between 1100-1600 rpm as mine does.

Overall I think it drove a lot like Haylands car but I do feel it's steering was lighter than his.

I would not be unhappy if I owned that car and it drove like it did today on every drive.

Another update,

I decided I couldn't wait for my dealer appointment to have the leak at the compressor airline fitting looked at.

Took the brass fitting out and replaced the o ring with a new one from a kit I have.

No more leak at the fitting and now when the compressor runs it's able to get the gallery pressure up to 1750 kpa before it cuts out due to temp.

Previously it would only reach 900-950 kpa.

A quick static test with a full reservoir shows access to normal height is achievable in around 6 seconds which is the same as Haylands 405.

Now to put it back together and test drive...

So you part exchanged yours for the dealer car then...???

I wonder if you have a failed engine mount or similar...?? Pete

He did try to sell me a 2019 4.4 ab though... Good deal and fair px on mine but would involve me taking out finance.

That's a possibility Pete. Going to check the ace pipes that run along the n/s of the car though as they are a prime suspect for those vibes.

So fixing the air line issue didn't make any major improvement.

Perhaps a tiny improvement but still not an acceptable ride, It's just too firm, jittery and unsettled.

Sounds as though the shocks are worn out.

That's what I thought on the last 322 Graeme but £1500 worth of new shocks barely made any difference.

Fitting non cvd shocks to my 1st facelift l322 made the most difference but that still wasn't as comfortable as my Westminster and that isn't an option on the 405.

Back to the drawing board again I suppose, I am genuinely loosing sleep at night obsessing over this now.

Mariana I think the best option would be to search for another and sell this one, checking the new one very carefully so that it drives to your liking this is what I would do if I want to stay with Range Rover.

The other option , is there someone out there who can find these faults. ?

That's what I did when I bought the last 322 after the bad experience I had with this same issue on the previous one.

I was enjoying that one for 2 weeks and even thinking my previous one was a lemon but then drove over a bad bit of cobbled road and its suspension went hard.

Unable to fix that one and I sold it and ponied up an additional £20k to buy a 405.

This one drove great on the test drive and the 4 hour journey home. It was maybe a week later that it felt hard.

If I sold it I'd have to go to another brand but nothing takes my fancy. I could force myself into a 7 series, s class, a8 or lexus but they don't really appeal.

The only saloon option that appeals is a Bentley flying spur or an older arnage but I've had a Continental before and my current yearly mileage doesn't agree with a W12 petrol.

As for someone being able to fix it I don't know but it would involve many hours of diagnostics which I have been doing myself anyway.

I took the easy way out with the same problems on my L 405 and p/ex for another one
Still bugs me to this day as to what the problem was 😂😂
One thing I never got round to checking on mine was the front and rear air valve blocks and cross over valves for correct operation ?? Would a blocked or sticking internal valve port cause air suspension not to compensate for ride optimisation between the 4 wheels ? Hence the bumpy ride

Thanks Aljo, I will keep trying but I'm already becoming tired as this is car number 3.

I've thought about valve blocks being a potential.

I recall Landymansam replaced all his dampers with non adaptive and his wasn't any better so it could be something outside of the cvd system.

If you don't mind Aljo, what did you try on yours or if the dealer did the work what did they try?

Scratch that just re read your previous post saying you had all new shocks and it didn't help.

Pretty much confirms its not the shocks themselves (at least on your old car)
