4.4 coolant pipe o-ring replacement pics

So, I had a coolant leak in the 4.4 tdv8 which using UV dye I traced to coming from the large bore pipes where they connect into the thermostat at the front of the engine .... green arrow shows leak point:



So a bit of google-fu and on here, I found the o-rings are meant to be 45mm by 3.5 or 4mm. So I ordered a pack of viton seals from Simply bearings. I did order others from another supplier, but they've yet to appear ... so going to cancel that order. Viton because they have a better reputation for higher temps.



Then armed with a screwdriver, a dental pic to hook out the o-rings , some lovehoney lube (yes, really) and some socks, I set about the task.

1 - Drain the coolant ... actually, nah, I didn't bother ... I set out with the intention of pulling the pipe and letting it spill everywhere so instead :

First, the socks ... I tucked them into the space between the pipes and the V to stop coolant spilling down the V too much:



The pipes are held in place by clips which slide upwards with a screwdriver:



They will slide up and clip into an unlocked placed about 12mm up ...



But I highly recommend removing them completely, as they ping off and fall down into the engine area which is a pain.

Then pull the pipe off. Might need a bit of encouragement with a screwdriver to leverage, but they will come straight outwards, and coolant will leak everywhere ... oh dear, what a shame, I'll hose it down later to clean it. At which point the socks you put in earlier will do their job and keep the V clear.



Now, at this point, you'll be thinking " I thought the coolant was meant to be pink/orange ?" It is, but I added yellow UV dye to it, which appears to have changed its colour a fair amount ... plus I had been topping up a lot with water which diluted the pink/orange as well.

Now you can see inside the pipe. There are actually 2 o-rings in there. The first is a plastic wedge shaped ring which guides the pipe and matches the angled face of the connector of the thermostat, then behind that is the rubber o-ring.

Hook out the rubber ring, and replace it with the new one ... you can see how the new one sits prouder and should seal better.

Then break out the lube, lots of lube around the seal and on the connector, and push it home. Just remember that there is a little tab on the connector which aligns with the centre of the metal clip section ( arrowed below )



I had to push the pipe quite firmly to get it home. The new o-ring must be quite a tight fit around the connector. The lube definitely made a difference as I tried to force it in dry first ... definitely went in better after being lubed .... errr Embarassed Laughing

Then do the same of the next pipe. Interestingly, this pipe came off very easily compared to the other... so much so, I even questioned myself on whether it had been on correctly in the first place which would explain why is may have been leaking.



You can see the old ring is quite flat compared with the new one:

Refill the coolant, and all should be well. £4 in seals versus £100 in pipe seems OK to me.

(unfortunately, I dont seem to be able to get the rear HVAC working now, but thats a different topic I think )

Lol. I’ve had it for years. Cause its water based it shouldn’t affect the coolant or internals. It’s been useful over the years for getting hoses to fit over pipes and things like that. It’s almost run out now, so I’m not sure how i will get it past the “what’s that you’ve bought for the car now?” budget filter of the wife ! Laughing V8 or else ...

I forgot to add, nice write up Fisha Thumbs Up Some nice skills and ingenuity there.

At least now I know what that website sells Whistle you will HAVE TO TELL THE BOSS when you order more to stay out of trouble, perhaps it could be wise to also peruse the electrical goods section for a gift for SHMBO at the same time, to keep the Boss happy...... BUT.....IMPORTANT......get good quality batteries, one would assume that the battery voltage required for good performance is as critical as it is for a FFRR Whistle Rolling with laughter

It will not turn your rubber into snot.

Nice write up. Where was the leak ? I’ve got coolant running down the bellhousing, could it be from those pipes? I think water is collecting in the V on mine, and then escaping out the back..
