Does the engine have to get up to temperature before anything happens? I often have to swap cars around on my unfortunately designed drive so the engine on the RR might be running for a minute or so while I let SWMBO out and obviously I have to move it a few metres. Geoff

Hi Geoff, in short, no.

If the soot level is high enough, I’ve personally had an active regen start within a mile from a cold start, water temp still on blue and oil barely lukewarm.
I think all you need is enough fuel in the tank, I don’t think it can happen below about 1/4 tankful. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Can I check my soot levels with the IIDTool?

I did get the DPF warning once recently but I cleared it OK with a quick run up the motorway but I have through necessity done lots of short journeys recently. Geoff

so you know how regen works,

A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regenerates when the electronic control unit (ECU) in a vehicle detects a significant build-up of soot particles within the filter, triggering a process that burns off the soot by raising the exhaust temperature to a high level, usually through injecting additional fuel into the engine during operation; this process is typically initiated when the vehicle is driving at a consistent speed for a period of time, allowing the exhaust system to reach the necessary temperature for regeneration ... - .- -.

I at first, thought that was the case, (up to temp etc) but as Gremlin states I have only ever seen it activate at 30mph and over, and once the g soot was over (for me ) 20.4g but it can be forced on with several diagnostic devices, on your drive if you want to. I believe GAP tool can force it on but I dont have that, so cant confirm.
I have also seen it not come on at 20.4g, but later, around 23g at speeds over 50mph and presumed it was because the distance between regens had not yet been met, which is another trigger.
I have seen a AR interrupt, and stop, when in a long wait in heavy traffic, and stop on long runs under 30mph as well.
So on your drive, generally dont be worried about it starting. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

Thanks all, I asked a simple question and I got an answer from Kot who has done the work and the research, basically moving the car a couple of metres with the engine running for a minute or two has no effect. I am not anxious and I'll certainly not be manoeuvring on the drive at 50mph or even 30mph and I don't want to clutter my RR with stuff I need to look at - I try to keep my eyes on the road. But if you do that day after day after day after day etc etc of course soot will accumulate. FFRR's need to be driven! Thumbs Up 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

No I've changed my MO the only time I need to swap cars around now is when I return from a long journey, maybe once a fortnight, because then the RR is at the back. Recently I've been lazy and then just used it for any journey, mainly short ones (still chauffeuring SWMBO to hospital and supermarkets etc), but going forward I just back it out and swap for another car (petrol) for the short journeys.

Still change the oil every 6 months, about 6k miles. Geoff

I've seen mine start a regen within a couple of miles from cold start before too. I think the trigger being acceleration up through 30mph and beyond and maintaining speed above that 30mph for a short period ( less than 1/2 mile in my cases ). The exhaust temp will jump very quickly for a regen ( less than 10 seconds and it'll jump to 400-500degC ).

The fattie can do the short journeys, but you just need to be mindful that once in a while, it needs a wee run to clear itself. V8 or else ...
