If you feel like that JayGee why are you driving a car now that is doing exactly that? You are free to make that decision right now but you are still doing it so what gives you the right to say to others what they should do?

I really wish that there was a "like/support" button on this forum.

If there were I'd press it.

Back on topic...
Giles Coren is paid to write column inches and the incident with his EV must have been a gift. If his petrol or diesel powered JLR vehicle had broken down it likley wouldn't have been passed by the editor as interesting enough for publication.
EV's are not pollution free and never can be. Ev's just get us less pollution particularly in dense traffic urban environments. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Last time I saw red writing was at school from the teacher........

To get back on topic & to answer cass I don't think the OP's EV could be re-energised as easily as a petrol or diesel which would only require a set of 12v jump leads & a charged battery.

As the OP's car effectively "died" then could someone tell me what the procedure is to initially recover &/or move EV's ?
I understand that they have a 12v system for lights/radio so would this have "died" too ?

There are companies ( see a previous thread) that will come out and 'jump charge' a dead EV so it can't be long before the AA/RAC etc incorporate this into their breakdown cover and into their breakdown vehicles. These are just teething issues and no reason to condemn the whole concept of EV's - what technology was born fully perfect? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Actually, since the problem was almost certainly a dead 12v battery, it could easily have been ‘jump started’. Ask me how I know. Wink Gone D3

It's an interesting topic, and it's great to see all the different opinions on the subject.

Only time will tell whether electric cars turn out to be a great success, or one of the biggest disasters in automotive history.

A friend of mine is of the opinion that ICE cars will become almost worthless come 2030, personally I think the values will go completely the opposite way if these engines really do become extinct - Although whether they do or not is a big if!!

Personally I think the manufacturers will end up trying to make ICE engines much cleaner and more economical, which they can....... And there I suppose lies another different view!

The fact of the matter is, nobody really knows and only time will tell.

However, come the end of this decade, unless I see things change dramatically, I'll be making sure that I've got at least one or two good low mileage ICE vehicles in my possession Thumbs Up

I think hydrogen will win out. Yes it’sa less efficient end to end energy transfer overall, but the combination of low pollution from use with ability to fill up quickly like normal and that range not degrading with each fill to me makes it worth while longer term. V8 or else ...

My comment was based on "dead" traction batteries.

Am I correct in assuming EV's need a good 12v (or 24v for commercials) battery to wake them up/get going/keep going ?

So on an EV how is the 12v topped up or is it just charged when plugged in like the motor batterys?
