United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Buckingham Blue
Brake refurb

Evening all having a little issue with the brakes - only on heavy braking it makes a grinding noise and a slight vibration through the wheel New discs and pads still the same so thinking the front calibers need reworking - rears were replaced a couple of years ago and the fronts have been cleaned etc but think after 230k miles and 15years maybe a refurb is in need.
Any suggestions as to where to have it done ?

Not cheap, but it's brakes so why would you cut corners?.

Thank you well I never worry about price on stuff like that change my tyres at 4mm Goodyear ultra grip winters and Michelin pilot sport summers

I can vouch for BCS.
They have just refurbished all four calipers for my 4.4TDV8 (brembo fronts) and they look stunning.
I havent fitted them yet but as soon as the weather improves i will be swapping them over…..
Can post some pics of the finished calipers if you want to see ?

Evening Sandy,

I rebuilt the front calipers on my SC as I had a sticking piston in one caliper. Other than the stuck piston being a bit of a sod to remove it was a straight forward job. I’ve had no problems off the brakes since either.

This is the rebuild kit I used:

They look really good David how long did it take to do ? I do have a small shotblasting kit - problem is once I get started dont know where to stop - just replaced all the control arms again thought it wasn't long ago I did them but it was 5 years and 120k miles and they were all shot

I stripped and rebuilt the calipers, cleaned them up very gently with a wire brush on the grinder in so as not to gouge the aluminium. The hard to reach areas I got a smaller hand held wire brush into. I then cleaned them up with compressed air and white spirit. I did the cleaning after I’d rebuilt them so I didn’t contaminate the innards of the caliper.

The strip, clean and first coat of paint were doing in an evening. I then did a further 2 coats of paint with 24hrs in between as the car was in bits in the workshop at the time and I wasn’t in a hurry to have it back on the road.

Cam-Tech-Craig also suggested using paint protection film over the transfer so that it didn’t lift during pressure washing or cleaning the car too.

Yes all good Eldest has just bought a 4.4 petrol
I might do them myself as I am going to have the transfer box out to replace the bearings and will just use the p38 or one of the others - yours certainly look good and if there is no problem with the function then great

Since the little fella arrived 3 weeks ago I’m using the SC every day and the wife has taken a shine to using it too so i’m on the lookout for a replacement. Can’t work out wether to go 4.4 TDV8 L322 or stretch out to an L405. Someone will likely get a very sorted 4.2SC when the time comes though.

I ended up buying a new transfer box from Duckworths when mine died. I must admit, I didn’t spend long looking at bearings, etc. but wish I had now as they weren’t that expensive.

I'd caution against doing a DIY refurb on brake calipers where you suspect there's an existing issue - the vibration you mentioned even after replacement brake discs & pads...
Reputable places have the experience and the test equipment to determine if there is a problem - and the parts to fix it.
And in the case of BCS, the inspection & test process to make sure everythin g is working as it should (and insurance if it transpires it isn't!).
