Right lads- I’m getting near tyre time and had a few what I’d consider brilliant tyres for the driving I do- one of my main requirements is the ability to minimise aquaplaning as much as physically possible- mainly because I use the M23 regularly to work and since they’ve resurfaced it- it’s absolutely shocking in the rain for standing water and add to that the unlit factor means there can be an unexpected wobble when you hit the wet stuff.

On these beasts the tyre of choice is the scorpions, I’m currently running good year f1’s which I like a lot, I’ve had the uniroyal rain sport 5’s which were also very good but I’ve seen so much about the Pirelli’s that I want to know are they really that good?

The mrs has them on her Audi q3 and I haven’t exactly thought ‘wow’ with them

I've driven many FFRR's with different tyres on in different stages of wear, the Pirelli ones have always been the best compromise as a mixed use tyre. I would also say whichever you go for, make sure they are marked LR, the compound and sidewall strength etc. are tuned to manufacturer specifications and perform much better compared to the same tyre but with generic build spec.
I've just put four PIR 255/55 R20 110Y on mine, replacing some non-LR marked ones at around 3mm. The ride quality is markedly different.

I replaced my 7 yr old LR marked Verde’s to the same and there was a noticeable difference in ride quality and handling. I’d put this down to more a modern design, 3 mm vs 7mm tread and old age hardened rubber vs new. I’m not entirely convinced there are material differences between make specific and generic tyres of the same model but given there is no cost saving in not ticking the box it’s sensible to opt for it. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

LR branded tyres are known as homologated tyres, LR spends over two years and millions of £ fine tuning the tyres to be as good and safe as they can.

There is usually a significant difference in the make up of the tyre, from compound, to belts and other internal construction.

Drive them back to back with generic ones and you will notice a difference...  Pete
