Ticking Noise when cold

I have a ticking/rattle noise only when cold, no error code or performance issue at all.

Mine does the same and always has when start from cold i get a tick, tick, tick until it starts warming up. I read someplace it is to do with the fan? cannot hear it in the car just when outside. I always thought it was the FBH trying to fire up? 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

Yep seems to be a common thing with the viscous fan gearing on the later L322s, mine does it sometimes.

Even new viscous fans can do it as Sam in Motor and Machine explained the issue on his channel. Tom

If you disconnect the drive belt and the noise goes away you can then narrow it down to something the belt is driving, I.E. the fan or a pulley, not unusual for the idler pulley and tensioner pulley to be noisy on these Thumbs Up

Can rule out pulley, tensioner and belt etc as they are all new. I also don’t think it is the viscos fan clutch as you can hear the fan seeding up without change in the ticking noise.. so there must be another explanation SOLD | Tuned MY 2011.5 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8 Orkney Grey | e-diff | ACC

The other thing that can make this sort of noise is the high pressure fuel pump, its driven by the cam chain and located on the right hand side at the top of the engine as you look at it, if it is coming from that area, a fuel filter change can often help.

Interesting! can you elaborate a bit? also relevant to fuel filter?

Are you suggesting the chain is oil starved? or has a slack? SOLD | Tuned MY 2011.5 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8 Orkney Grey | e-diff | ACC

No chain problem that I know of but changing the fuel filter can help with the fuel flow to the pump, also its the cheapest place to start if you suspect the noise is coming from the pump.
