3.6 TDV8 Running Lumpy/Missing & Smoking

Morning All Smile

A friend of mine has a 2006 3.6 TDV8 Vogue SE which has been parked up for 3 or 4 years due to health issues.

He's now trying to get it back on the road and when he's got the engine running it's smoking and stinks of diesel fumes out of the exhaust. It feels like it's running lumpy and misfiring apparently.

I'm going to pop over today and get a look at it with him but the TDV8's we've had in the family have never put a foot wrong so any suggestions as to where to start looking would be appreciated.

Apparently the engine management light isn't on and it's not showing reducer performance on the dash either.

Thanks!

Sounds like a fuel pressure problem, could well be the vanes in the HP fuel pump have corroded due to standing or the PCV / VCV is not moving, the EML can stay off until some meaningful torque is requested.

Just an obvious one to give it a service, especially fuel filter.

Otherwise, a case of following the trail (air, fuel, ignition) and correcting what you find. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Had a look at this yesterday and upon starting it the EML was on.

Here’s the code:

P132E-22 seems to be a turbo actuator fault.

Looking at the commander values versus the actual values it looks like both actuators are seized.

This was 3000rpm:

This was at idle:

The car idles ok and feels smooth but is very smoky. When revving it you hear the noise change and it sounds like it’s missing almost but doesn’t feel like it and it smokes more.

Drop both the lower intercooler pipes

A small amount of oil should drain from them...

Lots of oil means bad things have happened

Thanks Mikey.

I’ll try and get back to get a look at it sometime soon.

This one was running ok when parked up but hasn’t enjoyed sitting. Could seals have dried out and be causing problems or similar? 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

It's an actuator code. Most likely it's seized having been parked up, but if the turbo internals have collapsed, it also logs an actuator fault...

Bur a seized actuator doesn't usually cause it to miss and smoke. A collapsed turbo would

Thanks Mikey.

Would it be possible to put an endoscope up the turbo pipe and look at the vanes to see if anything looks untowards?

Managed to get this RR down to ours today to get a look at it.

I’ve taken the under trays off it tonight and popped the bottom pipes off the intercooler.

There was some black oil that dribbled out of the pipes, not the intercooler. It wasn’t a lot though. How much would be considered normal on one of these?

Looking under the bonnet, I’m glad mines an SC! There’s no room to move under this thing!

Check everywhere in the engine bay for chewed wires before getting too deep with the turbos.

Thumbs Up

Will be giving it a good going over tomorrow.

A fault on the turbo actuator is the only code that comes up so with a bit of luck it’ll be something easy enough to sort.

Definitely not much oil at all in the intercooler pipes.

Wiring loom looks intact all around the engine bay.

Drivers side turbo actuator free and moving.

Passengers one is playing hide and seek! Any hints or tips on finding my way into it?

I’m glad mine is an SC, the engine bay is empty in comparison to this one!

Decided to have a look on the IID tool tonight just to see if one of the actuators was doing anything.

The commanded position is the same for both and moves when revs are being applied. The actual position for both never changes.

The peaks and troughs in the demanded position matched the throttle being poked.
This is the only fault code that’s logged.

When the car is running it sounds lethargic when being revved as if no boost is being created. The smoke seems to have cleared as it’s not filling the workshop but it does smell rich.

The only fault code logged seems to refer to the passengers side turbo actuator but according to live values neither of them are moving. They’re both lingering around the same readings.

Bank 1 is stationary at 0.0969, that’s the flat darker blue line, Bank 2 boost pressure is moving ever so slightly but is not going above 0.5 or below 0.4 so isn’t doing much at all either.

I was hoping to see the drivers side one moving as I can reach that one and move it freely but it’s not moving on diagnostics either. If one bank was stuck, would it affect the readings from the other bank?

This really is my first foray into TDV8 maintenance so am really going in blind on this one.
