That was just the engine. Parts bill since Feb is around 8k.

Parts bill in the last 12 months is near £11k.

Like you say though, it’s all done and should last a long time now.

I’m well pleased anyway. Been quite enjoyable doing the work and has been a good way to unwind after a days work. Might actually have to talk to the wife now though

I once did a nut and bolt restoration on a 1988 Merc 500SL and i regret selling it to this day (I Exported it to an Australian bloke)

The RR is back

It's driving beautifully. The steering wheel is dead ahead, it's driving perfectly straight and it's riding the bumps beautifully. It's easily as good as the 24k mile one we've got here now.

The emissions from the engine speak volumes just now so the top end rebuild I've done has obviously worked wonders.

Last year it scraped through the emissions... and I mean scraped through. This year it's a different story altogether...

Fast Idle Test:

CO: Limit is 0.20, my car was 0.00.
HC: Limit 200, my car was 3.

Natural Idle:

Limit: 0.30, my car was 0.00.

To say I'm pleased with that is an understatement!

Three things I've noticed...

At 60-70mph there's a slight vibration from it. It feels like it's at the rear of the car and is speed dependant. I'm 99% sure it's a wheel vibration. Am unsure if it's possibly a flat spot on a tyre from it sitting for so long or if it's a wheel that's out of balance. I'll use it for a bit over the next day or two and if it doesn't clear I'll balance all 4 wheels at the weekend.

Now all of the noise from the drivetrain has disappeared I can hear a little bit of wind noise from the sunroof. With the blind closed it gets rid of it. When looking at the sunroof from the outside it's not sitting quite flush with the roof, the front of the glass is a touch low so that could probably do with tweaking slightly.

And lastly... If I'm being ultra critical there's a tiny grumble from the air conditioning compressor which you can hear when stationary. Well, I can but my Dad can't... It's not bad enough to make me go and change the compressor though... Well, not at the moment anyway

Next plans are a couple of bits of bodywork to sort out and then I want the front seats recoloured just to tidy up the interior.

That’s the RR now done 250 miles since it passed it’s MOT and other then the fuel gauge moving at an alarming rate it’s been faultless

It’s running perfectly, love and smooth, power delivery is effortless, the ride is superb and the way it’s riding bumps on the roads is fantastic.

The 1 issue I have is a slight intermittent vibration at motorway speeds. Sometimes it’s as smooth as silk, other times it’s got this vibration. I’ve balanced the wheels and checked for flat spots on the balancer but it’s not made any difference.

I’ve read that if the handbrake shoes are catching slightly then it can cause this so am going to look into readjusting them to see if it makes any difference.

Other then that though, I’m really happy with how she’s running!

250 miles in 2/3 of a 105 litre tank in 5 days is alarming though

David, i had this on my 2012 TDV8 and it turned out to be the center prop bearing was shot all the rubber around the bearing had perished or was perishing. now with all the work you have done i cannot remember if you have inspected this part or not. Bearings are cheap enough to purchase and with your workshop a straight forward job too. I also changed out the UJ while i was at it. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

I need to get under it and have another look about. I’ll be upset if it is the prop bearing as the shaft was new less then 12 months ago

When I changed the gearbox last year the bearing on it had collapsed and the UJ’s didn’t look healthy so I swapped the whole assembly for a new one.

Great to hear David - I'm getting 18.2 (Don't forget the .2) according to computer. That was on an hour run up the A1 to Peterborough for the Land Rover show at a steady 70mph. I can live with that - I would imagine the roads are more twisting and hilly up there so your mpg takes a hammering  Gavin

If I come off the motorway and head up the lanes to home then I can loose 4 or 5mpg off my average very quickly as it doesn't get above 3rd gear.

Thankfully we're on to the motorway within 5 mins of leaving home to go most places so it's not too bad round here

Have only done around 300 miles in the RR at the moment.

We were away for a week in the XFR last week and this week I’ve been out of action due to COVID. Managed to avoid it for 2.5 years but it got me finally.

Drove the SC today to go for a coffee just to get out of the house. On the motorway on the way there the vibration is really driving me mad. If I sit at 50 it doesn’t occur but if I get to 60 it’s started. I really need to get it sorted as it ruins the whole car.

So far I’ve balanced all of the wheels again and it’s not made any difference. There have been a couple of journeys when it’s not occurred but it’s there 99% of the time.

Am convinced it’s not a brake binding or similar as none of the wheels are getting remotely warm and the car is smooth as anything under braking. It doesn’t seem to be load dependent either. It wasn’t doing it before I did all this work on the same wheels and tyres.

Coming home on the back roads with speeds below 50 the car really is a joy to drive.
