Managed to get a quick few coats of primer on ,

I used a few sheets of a4 paper folded back over itself so as not to have and harsh lines I really only got the primer on so I can see what my panel looks like. As base and clear will only magnify what’s already there so if you have slight discrepancy in your work it will be a major problem come final result.

Super happy with how it’s looking if anyone is stuck or needs advice on repairing dame pm me and I will help in any way I can!

Will hopefully get some decent weather tomorrow

Excellent work - the problem thesedays with bodyshops is that very few of them have any panel beaters, they have panel fitters.

Well done for tackling the job & it looks like it will turn out very well & save jet another future classic from the scrapyard.

As it happens I do know of an excellent bodyshop in the West Midlands (Wednesbury) that would have been more than capable of repairing that panel.

Every single body shop I spoke to gave me a bullshit reason why they can’t do it , those that would undertake it said they can’t weld aluminium but it definitely needs a new qtr panel.

I had to run to Halfords earlier to grab some masking tape … the amount of people that would rather wait 20mins to get a bulb changed…

I come from the world of how do we fix this.

Especially as the l322 is now becoming an old girl the cost of repairs can easily make it uneconomical to repair.

I have everything else on my car perfect , all service up to date . New discs, gearbox flushed etc etc

So to have a cosmetic issue write my car off is ridiculous.

And like most in here I love to get stuck in.

Doors wings and bonnet aluminium, rear qtrs steel AFAIK

I never even looked into the material, literally body shops I spoke to were useless. I contacted approximately 30 in the local area , only 6 did I manage to get a quote from!

Like you, I've dressed my garage up with plastic sheet and just colour coded my A and D pillars which have turned out nice. Front bumper next.
Are you using 2k paint?

So I’ve sanded down the primer and it’s all looking good, there was a couple of tiny imperfections that I could have ignored and went straight to base coat but easier to fill it and sand it back , The little bits I have sanded I’ll hit with a rattle can go build primer - Only ever use this stuff to fix areas you have blown through or filled over - it’s not the same as the 2k hi build you spray from a gun. But it saves you a mountain of time cleaning out a gun especially when you only have one gun !

I think I had 1K and 2K as well. Was shocked to find 3 shades of Santorini black though!
Supplier gave me three swatches to pick from but with the naked eye it was hard to see any difference.
I hope yours blends in nicely. Cheers Kev.

I e already painted the tailgate , New paint it lighter than original ,

But I’ll be blending in both qtr panels from tailgate and bumper so hopefully it will be ok , from what over read up I should have bought some clear base to blend into a wet panel but hey I didn’t and it’s a bank holiday lol so we shall roll the dice worst case senario I rub it down and repaint it .
