Engine oil?

Hi!

What engine oil do you use?

5w30 or 10w40?

Out of curiosity - some say stick to the recommendations and some say 10w40 is better for a high milage engine etc.

Just want to make my car last as long as possible. What have you opted for and why.

Cheers,
Gus Fuji White 2011, 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

I just changed the oil and filter in my car this morning and used shell 5w30 AJ-L which meets the approval for the 4.4 TDV8

Do not use anything other than the correct spec oil esp with a DPF equipped vehicle (Aussie versions came with no DPF) as it needs ‘low ash’ formula. If you want to look after your car the best you can (at any mileage) change it more regularly than the service schedule and it’s an easy DIY job with a suction oil extractor. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

The 4.4 TDV8 DPF needs a specific specification of oil. Using anything different and you're opening up to a world of problems.

The correct specification is:
5W-30
STJLR.03.5005
WSS-M2C934-B

A favourite I like to use is Petronas 5000 FJ. Proper branded oil but inexpensive. If you want to extend the life of the engine, the best and a relatively inexpensive way is to do an oil and filter change regularly, such as every 5,000‐7,000 miles (aka 8,000 ‐ 10,000km). Modern oils are also a filter.

The oil change on the 4.4 TDV8 is the easiest I've ever done - get a bucket, pop off the hose, change the filter whilst draining. Top back up. It doesn't take more than 30 minutes. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I am not an oil expert

My understanding is that dpf requires low SAPS, like c1 oil
Dpf does not determine viscosity or ACEA requirements

You may find a higher viscosity C1 oil runs quieter in your engine, and is more appropriate for climates with higher average climate temps such as Saudi

Personally I follow manufacturers recommendation
Why take a risk to do otherwise? Those risks might include oil galleys which are too narrow for the engine oil viscosity chosen resulting in poor lubrication and cooling to vital engine components……

I used Smith and Allan for my 2012 4.4 TDV8 engine oil change it has the recommended Low SAPS Ford WSS-M2C934-B compatibility, they sell it in 5 litres cans or 20 litre barrel. I have had no issues over the last 6 months 4k miles.

Thanks for the link - cheaper than Opie!
Unless you are doing a lot of towing or high stress off roading there is no point IMO using expensive oil on these low revving big engines as for everyday driving the main reason you are changing oil is to remove the soot load and that is done by the choice of change interval. Expensive oils also are likely the true synthetics which are better in high stress applications but which conversely are poorer at holding soot in suspension. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I buy the Petronas when on offer and keep it in the garage. Its normally £39 Inc VAT for 10 litres so, same kind of price as Smith & Allen. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

The reason Im asking is because my mechanic has been filling my car up with 10w40 for the last 14000km or so... want to change now to the proper spec and 5w30. He said it will bring greater protection at higher temperatures but I fear the oil is to thick for the engine.

Can I just drain it using a pump and fill it with the proper oil or is a proper flush necessary?

Anyone whos had the same problem?

Any advice is much appreciated. Cheers Fuji White 2011, 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

I wouldn't worry about it being too thick as long as it's got the low ash Low SAPS rating. Just drain and refill with the correct type and you will be fine. ( maybe find another mechanic though ) 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
