One of mine I found as new old stock on eBay and the other was either from my local dealer or Duckworths. More then likely Duckworths as I’ve only had a couple of small bits from Taggarts so save waiting for the post from Duckworths when I’ve needed something to finish a particular job.

The wife decided she wanted a day out today so there wasn’t much progress with the car.

One thing I noticed yesterday when I had the car out was that the air con had stopped working for some reason.

I put the air con gauges on it and noticed that there was zero pressure in the system which was strange as the air con worked last time I drove it. Well, it certainly did last summer and the compressor was still running during the winter.

Anyway, this evening I put the gauges back on the car this evening and filled the system with nitrogen.

I filled the system to 5 bar and over 30 minutes didn’t find any leaks. I then filled the system up to 10 bar and went over all of the pipes, all of the unions and the compressor and didn’t see any soapy bubbles anywhere.

This picture was taken at 23:28.

This picture was taken at 00:03.

There’s a slight drop in pressure but not much. I’ve left the pressure in it over night so will see what the gauges show in the morning.

If there is a leak in it that’s as small as that I reckon the only way I’m going to find it is to have it gassed and some UV dye put in the system.

There are 3 holes in the boot floor that need filling after the LPG tank was removed. 2 of then are bolt holes and the other one is a bigger one in the middle that had been cut so that the pipes could come out of the tank and under the car. Whilst the air con gauges were connected I made a patch for that one.

The other 2 I think I’m going to try and fill with weld as they’re too small to make a patch for I think.

I’ve never welded on a car before so am a bit worried about blowing the electrics. Is disconnecting the battery enough or are there further precautions I should be taking?

If it were me, and obvs it’s not, I would just get a roll of roofing flashband and stick a patch over the holes….. after all you are never going to see it again, and check periodically if it’s still stuck down. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Welding on a car is not for the faint hearted!! make sure you practice to get the settings right on a bit of scrap first then short sharp bursts. As the holes are close together i would move from 1 to the other adding a small blob each time.
Make sure battery is disconnected personally i remove both the positive and neg, and make sure the welder has a good ground too.
when your done grind away the excess and remember to treat the back to protect from rust.

if you cannot easily get to the back to treat, then i would just cover with an adhesive patch like already mentioned. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

After having my Air Con 'checked' and refilled by Kwik Fit a few weeks ago, its now throwing out warm air. I'd like to use my IID tool to see if the compressor is at fault and have a proper leak test done. Can you give me some details of your setup David and if Nitrogen is available to the general public? Gavin

Sure. I bought a cheap set of gauges off eBay. I think they were around 28 quid.

We've got an account with Air Products for welding gas bottles and as I've got old Citroens I've got a bottle of Nitrogen here for recharging spheres. It's handy that Nitrogen is used for pressure testing air con too so I just use a regulator on that to connect it to the hoses.

The proper pipe in the kit with the gauges doesn't fit the regulator so my setup is a bit Heath Robinson but it's worked for years.

This was when I pressure checked my Grans car after putting a condenser in it recently.

Did Kwik Fit put any UV dye into the system? If they did, get a UV torch and some glasses off eBay for a few quid and you should be able to find then leak quite easily. Any air con specialist should be able to do a nitrogen pressure test too.

Many thanks David. I'll contact my local air con contact and let them diagnose it properly. I'm pretty sure Kwik Fit just did a pressure test for 30mins, didnt find a leak and then topped it up, but I'll call them and check. Gavin

Kwik Fit will have done a vacuum test.

I've had it on my P38 before that it held a vacuum perfectly but the gas didn't last 24hrs as the pressure in the system found a pin hole that didn't show up on the vacuum test.

I soak everything with fairy liquid in a spray bottle when it's under pressure and have always found a leak that way before but there's nothing visible on mine.

It'll be interesting to see how close to 10 bar the gauges are when I get into the workshop later on today.

the vac tests are not that reliable i always get die added and a nitrogen charge. great way to find leaks with the UV lamp and glasses. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

have the pressure re-checked if it is still up to pressure you know it is the compressor. Mine went last year and would intermittently work but only when the temp was below 25deg over that it would not work. I changed the compressor and all is well again. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

Yup… definitely a leak somewhere. 5 bar loss in around 15hrs. This one is going to be a pain to find. A recharge and some UV dye might be the easiest way for this one.

I’d go with a good look at the condenser first, Dye is probably the only way you will find it though. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
