UPDATE

Soooo, it’s been at Mark Smiths for a few weeks now and still no definitive diagnosis…so they have taken the exhaust off before the DPF to rule that out…also removed the inlet to rule that out too….still won’t start unless on easy start then runs really rough on that…they’ve checked all 3 fuel pumps and the pressure and that’s ok too..
They mentioned some back smoke from the inlet which they are thinking is indicating a probable valve problem…argh…
I’ve checked my fuel receipt so it’s not petrol in the diesel….
The costs at the minute are reasonable and they didn’t want to run me up a massive bill to not get anywhere which is fine….
So I’m going to get it recovered back to my parking and attempt to do the next stage myself, I need to remove the injectors so I can compression test each cylinder…and depending on them results if ok send the injectors away after checking if timing is ok…
Does that seem like the sensible next option? I just think the next step is to do a compression test…
It’s also available as a non runner depending on what I get offered…

Has it been confirmed that exhaust gases are getting out the back to indicate that the rear muffler isn't totally blocked in case it has collapsed internally?

Just thinking aloud but black smoke in the inlet could also be EGR related. These are not a common fail on these engines and neither are valve issues. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Is restricted performance still showing with the ign on but the engine not yet started?

Monitoring live values for critical sensors such as the crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor for those few seconds that it fires might reveal something amiss, such as an erratic or even missing crankshaft position sensor signal.

Not sure I’ll see when I get it back but I’d have hoped the specialist would have checked that already…

UPDATE!
So I collected it back from the specialist, and just out of interest I took the oil cap off to reveal NO CHAIN on the cam sprocket inside there!
So the chain has failed…first question is it a safe engine or interference? I’m fearing the latter as the running got worse and now will hardly start so fearing bent valves etc…

In their defence I’d say it seems very uncommon for engine chain problems on these…nobody seems to have heard of this problem before on these engines…
Also I can gauge by the little info I’m gaining both on here and the Facebook group that it’s a very rare fault I guess..

Hmmmm, a workshop should really be viewing an issue with an open mind and know fault codes are often consequential. An engine not running / running rough is unlikely to be exhaust related and more what you started looking at block related e.g. cylinders, timing, injectors.

I also havent read of timing chain issues on this engine, only the 5L being a problem. I guess next stop is to a specialist, engine out and heads off to start looking at damage to see whats salvageable? 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
