United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Santorini Black
2011 4.4 tdv8 - Strong smell from exhaust

Recently been getting what I think is a strong smell of exhaust fumes as if the car is chugging out soot! Tend to notice it after a run and we park up and have the car running but also does it at startup too. No real visual black smoke from the tailpipes but the smell is really strong.

No faults registered, and a smoke test shows no intake leaks!

It’s not got a massive soot reading for the dpf and isn’t doing a regen at the time either as my IID tool Allows me to check this.

I’m at a bit of a loss really!

Any thoughts and suggestions of what to look at next?

Just the usual ones like random stereo ones and a few other bits. I reset earlier and going to take it for a drive again in the morning to see what’s come back.

Mine smells all the time - as have all my diesel cars ( not that this helps)
I wonder with the current fuel crisis and the particular shortages of diesel if the quality at the pump is what it was? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Does it smell only from the exhaust (interrupted regen, shot DPF ...), or under the bonnet (fume leak around EGR, under injector, headers)?

I’m suspecting you will have a P3040D code in there when you check later… The temp sensor fails lots on the 4.4 which leads to overfueling and stinks like an old ice cream van!

I had the exact same issue, no codes but changed the sensor anyway just in case. Made no difference whatsoever 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

I think I may have this issue.

Need to confirm but is this an easy fix DIY job?

May I ask what the name of this temperature sensor is?
