Have replaced the rear discs, pads and handbrake shoes on my 2012 4.4 tdv8 and found one of the callipers badly seized.

Bought a set of 'after market' calipers as funds are a bit tight at the moment and was assured they were the right ones for the car' I'm not convinced they are fitting correctly as the piston seems to be sitting on the edge of the pad and the front fingers of the calliper don't seem to go as far across.

Has anyone experienced this, I've only bolted one on at the moment and attached a couple of pics.

Any thoughts on refurbing the old calliper if I send these back. Do new pistons and seals tend to work?

Have you still got the old pads?

If you look at the pad that was in front of the piston you’ll be able to see an outline of where the piston was sitting on the pad.

Be worth checking with Duckworths (Site Sponsor) to see if Land Rover do rebuild kits for the calipers. If you can get the piston out it won’t be that difficult to do yourself.

Yep, mark from the piston is more central on the old pads!

Are you sure that you’ve got the calliper mounting brackets on the right wheel?
The last photo look like the pad is upside down?

Think its just the camera angle, they've not been swopped over...

It doesn't look right but I can't see why. I did my rear brakes the other week ( Disks, Pads and Callipers) and am sure they didn't look like this. You can rebuild the old callipers with new seals and pistons as long as there is no scoring of the bores. The parts are not expensive and I'd have gone that route but for the fact I needed to do it quickly. The pistons are very difficult to remove if seized. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I was the same and went new for a quick swap rather than refurb and it possibly not work.

The calliper doesn't look like it goes far enough in towards the hub to cover the pads although it bolts on OK and doesn't foul anything. I'm just waiting for a reply from the supplier to see what they have to say, so we'll see but I'm now stuck with the car dismantled on the drive for the weekend.

Can you not compare a new and old calliper, the new ones are either smaller or the mounting holes are further out than the originals, or some other discrepancy which should be noticeable if you have them side by side...  Pete

They do look slightly different different but I'd put that down to them being 'aftermarket' Supplier has now come back to me saying they're not suitable which is a complete contradiction to what they told me when I ordered them so they're going back!

PITA as I've now got it dismantled and no calliper replacement.

The original calipers were made by TRW. If you buy the TRW part, they're the original OEM caliper, they just have the Land Rover logo blanked off

The cheap ones (I think are Bearmach or ABS?) which you have pictured are notorious for failing after a few years, whereas lifespan of the TRW calipers is around 10 years.

One of my rear calipers had seized and once off the car, I tried everything to get that corroded piston out and refurb it but to no success.

A top tip I found on YouTube is to unbolt the old caliper but leave the brake hose connected. Then pump the brake pedal and this will pop the piston out, doing the hard work for you. Then, clamp the hose and disconnect the caliper to swap with a new one.

These are going back to the supplier. I suspect they're either for a sport or maybe a 3.6tdv8. I'm going to try a refurb on the old calliper. The piston came out OK after partially using the method you suggested and it looks good inside.

I'd seen TRW on some of the suppliers part and wondered what it meant. I'm now a bit more savvy re part numbers after lots of online googling but I think sellers are listing wrong versions as suitable for the 4.4tdv8 when it come to the cheaper callipers.

I spoke to Bearmach and they suggested a version as suitable and even checked it with my VIN number. The part number they gave me then came up as Discovery 3/RR Sport with some of the other main LR parts suppliers including Advanced Factors the site sponsor here so totally confused.

If the piston refurb doesn't work I'll just have to bite the bullet and order an OE one.

If you can get the bleed valve and piston out and the cast looks ok without corrosion in the chamber, the Frenkit 245918 kit is the refurb kit you need. There's various sellers on ebay. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Thanks for your comments! Reverted to the refurb option. Old calliper media blasted, etch primered and painted and new Frentech piston and seal kit fitted.

Now back on the car and bled with a cheap Vacuum bleed kit off Amazon which seemed to work well.

Think I might have to do the other side now as its looking scruffy!
