Vibration at speed

I've ruled out the usual suspects - have had all the tyres balanced and 4 wheel alignment done (all brand new tyres)

- Have just had the front discs and pads replaced.
- 2 x new rear CVD shocks
- 4 x brand new tyres.

I still get a vibration after 70 through to 90 and its more noticeable when slowing down towards 70.

I've been told the centre proper bearing is fine.

What else should I be looking at?

The work so far has been done at a trusted and respected specialist so I don't doubt their findings/opinion. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE - 'Black Betty'

No - these are all things I've done to try and eliminate it (needed doing anyway). 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE - 'Black Betty'

Do you get any sense if it's front or rear? Is there vibration through the steering wheel? Even with a full wheel balance and new tyres (what tyres BTW) you can still get dynamic inbalances from other parts of the rotating mass like the disks and there are wheel balancing systems that will test the wheel on the car such as Hunter road force systems. Also driveshafts and CV joints ( inner and outer) can be culprits for vibration. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I think it's coming from the rear.

The tyres that were put on the front isn't what I ordered (P Zero vs Scorpion Zero) so just had them replaced. On the way back, it feels the vibration is coming from the rear - very little vibration through the steering wheel, but it is there a little. You can feel it more through your bum than the steering wheel. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE - 'Black Betty'

Any imbalance at the front would be felt through the steering wheel so for the moment rule that area out. I'd rotate the wheels one at a time from the front to the rear and test but if this was present before the tyre change it's not an obvious fix. When I recently changed my rear disks I noticed that they were balanced (LR genuine / Brembo) I could see how an unbalanced disk of this size and rotating mass could cause vibration. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

if the center bearing is fine have the UJ looked at and check the rubber doughnut for signs of wear. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

Think the NSR caliper is binding. Disc is roasting hot, can't touch it yet OSR is relatively cool in comparison. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE - 'Black Betty'

Pistons seized - brake disks F**ked. Didn't have vibration but when I just did the disks and pads one of the pistons was very tight and took considerable force to push it back to get the pads in and after just a short slow drive around the block the disk was too hot to touch so knew for certain I had a seized piston. Replaced both even though the other side was working. Likley your disk is warped by heat and pads cooked. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

It's a common issue... if you fancy doing it yourself, some pointers...

When you pull up in traffic and notice that smoke is pouring off the rear nearside wheel it's time for some work....! That's a problem with the S/C... 500+BHP and you just don't notice a sticking calliper....

Past experience tells me to just change the lot, so a trip to my favourite garage, a borrow of a lift, and the fun begins...

I decided to rebuild the callipers, new ones for the 2010 up L322 are £350 each, rebuilt, nearly £200 each....

The nearside was totally seized on but came off with just a little hammer work..! the offside looks like it had been partially seizing for some time... The offside calliper came apart fairly easily, an airline blew the piston out, no way was that happening to the nearside one, a club hammer and chisel was needed to get the piston out...

Nearside...

With both pistons out the bores looked fine

The pistons didn't look too bad either but apparently they can oval when they get very hot...

Everything else was stripped off and they were sent to the powder coaters to be finished in Dark Gunmetal, they were away for a couple of days and on return I rebuilt them with new seals and pistons along with a fitting kit.... Rebuilt and ready to fit with all new parts..

The new Brembo discs were already finished in what looks like powder coating... a very similar colour to the callipers.

The handbrake shoes are known to delaminate and jam the brakes up so it made good sense to replace them as well, they were fairly worn.

The back plates are also well known for rusting away so I wire brushed them and gave them a thin coat of Dinitrol ML to help them live a bit longer.. Fitted with new shoes and springs..

You can see where the offside calliper has been sticking in the past and allowing the disc to get like this...

Outside, all looks well...

Inside, rather poor.....

Then the fun bit begins, putting all the nice shiny bits back on....

Bedding in procedure.

What did it cost...

Calliper seals and pistons £30
Calliper and carrier sandblast and powdercoat £60
Brembo discs £102
Pajid pads £30
Pajid Handbrake shoes and fitting kit £38

So £260 in parts and about 6 hours over a couple of days... Less than the new price of one calliper...!!!

Should be sorted for a while now...

I’d have rebuilt mine but wanted to minimise time off the road so went with new (recon?) callipers. If you go for rebuilding and don’t have a high pressure air system pull the inner pad and use the brake to push out the piston before you take the calliper off. I got mine out with pipe grips and a vice but it was very hard work. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

To be honest, ordinarily I'd be all over this doing it myself but because these days I simply cannot be arsed, it'll go back in to the garage to be done. What's another few hundred quid when you've already put about 3k in to it over the past 6 weeks? Shocked Laughing 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE - 'Black Betty'
