I've got a 2010 and can't find any significant rust so far. The lower lip of the upper tailgate is prone to rust as are the rear wheel arches/sills but I think that is more to do with the dirt/mud etc rather than the steel. There's a buyers guide somewhere - in the Wiki maybe? |

My 2012 WM was much worse for rust than my 2004 4.4. Maybe a higher scrap content in the steel? But after at least nine years since the last 322 was made, where and how they have been kept will be the main factors. Scottish cars, or those from windy seaside locations will be worse for corrosion than say ones from London. Only Range Rovers since 1988 |

Never been convinced about the quality of the steel being a factor in rust on cars. It's mostly to do with the paint quality. Earlier cars may or may not have better build quality in certain areas but the later cars were more 'sorted' in many other ways. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322) |

Any year can/will rust on the tailgate - how LR have managed to not sort this after 50 years of practice is quite amazing. |

likley they never expected the owners to keep them long enough for rust to develop. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322) |

I think the later ones used more recycled steel.

Thanks all. Yep agree it’s a mixed bag with all being 10+ years old. Good point on mileage and Scottish cars.

My 2012 was ok as far as the bodywork goes but the subframes were badly corroded. I dont know about earlier pones but JLR had a long way to go to get rust prevention right. BMW i3 Electric Car

What's your budget? Not just to purchase but for repairs and maintenance. These cars can be cheap to buy when they are old but you can be landed with bills equal to the purchase price when something goes wrong like the 3.6's are prone to with EGR valves and turbo failure. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322) |

I had a 2008 & 2011 L322, the 2011 had the tailgate replaced at 3 years old due to rust, it also had rust bubbles on the rear wheel arches too. I had the 2008 for the same amount of time in Canada with plenty of salt on the roads during the winters but with no rust anywhere at the same point.

Just to contrast the above, I ran a 2008 for twelve years and it had a tailgate replacement due to rust after seven years. The bubbles in the rear arches began after eight years.

Agreed - I have had a 2006 and now a 2011 and both are rust free so I think it is quite variable and depends to a degree on what they have been used for, where they live and how well they are looked after - but then you will find some cars that have been well looked after that show rust

Thanks, those images are helpful for showing the panels underneath the sill covers and arch liners. I'm out looking at L322's this weekend - favourite on the list is a 2010 3.6TDV8 Vogue SE with all the toys |
