DSC HDC / AIR SUSP INACTIVE

Reversing on a snowy incline yesterday, trying to park at a friend's, got a bong with the amber triangle ⚠️ and HDC / AIR SUSPENSION INACTIVE messages on the dash.

No other warning lights on the dash.

Car was barely at operating temperature.

DSC switch amber light doesn't come on and pushing the switch has no effect.

Air suspension is locked at standard height and inhibitor light is on. Height cannot be raised or lowered but the car does self level and compressor kicks in as required.

GAP iid shows the following errors

ABS-Brake Module

0x58 Precharge pump

0x32 CAN bus Fault

I pulled the negative for 10 mins and touched +/- to no avail

After battery disconnecting the ABS light comes on but this is reset by turning the wheel lock to lock.

Steering angle sensor reads okay

ABS kicks in as normal

Speedo /odo work

Battery is 12,9 V and alternator output between 13,8 -14,2V

But, expectedly, I DON'T have anti-spin (easy to try on snow)

I tried disconnecting/connecting the ABS multiplug and the precharge pump power cable with no effect.

No water ingress evidence or visible moisture.

Gap IID is unable to clear the faults.

Having read the various LR and BMW threads, this points to a faulty ABS ECU (more likely) or a faulty precharge pump (less likely)

What I observed though, was that my battery negative was LOOSE in the first place.

Granted I have the snowy weekend ahead of me, what else could / should I be checking / trying before I take her to the garage?

Any additional advice appreciated

mine is the same, havent looked at it yet, when i get time RR 2005 4.4 petrol

I am thinking its nothing to do with the suspension, that’s why the GAP cant clear it.
I think it’s a CAN fault some where RR 2005 4.4 petrol

Your assessment is correct as far as the air suspension is concerned. There's nothing wrong with it. But it defaults at standard height once an ABS malfunction has been registered. I had the same when my PCV valve went bad.
The CAN bus error is a direct or indirect (doesn't really matter) consequence of the inability of the ABS module to communicate with the precharge pump.
The precharge pump error vode 0x58 OR 88 is either a faulty pump or most likely the ABS module. The 12V power supply to the precharge pump comes from the ABS module itself. This is the error to be cleared. But of course persists as the wiring within the module has perished.
I have spoken to an ECU specialist and they pretty much consider it certain to be the module as it's a common failure. While a precharge pump failure isn't unheard of, most of the times, by far, is the module.
I'll be visiting on Tuesday, they quoted 150-200 euros with 1 year warranty.

Dropped the ABS module at the ECU repair shop today. As I needed the car and there was no way I would leave her on their street overnight (prime target for cat theft). Driving around without it is somewhat scary, mostly because of the feather light steering at higher speed...Hope they're fixing it today and to have it back by tomorrow.

Just for anyone else wondering, here's a list of non-working things without an ABS module:

HDC
DSC
AIR SUSPENSION
SPPEDOMETER
ODOMETER
SPEED ADJUSTING RADIO VOLUME
SPEED DEPENDENT DOOR LOCKING
PDC ACTIVATION/DEACTIVATION
SPEED RELATED WINDOW WIPERS

TRANS FAILSAFE PROG ON DASH, ALTHOUGH APPARENTLY SHIFTING OK
LOW RANGE

.
God knows what else...I hooked up the IID and got a ton of error codes. At that point I just unplugged it and turned a blind eye altogether.

Need that module repaired and back on asap...

Under the bonnet, in front of the driver, on the inside of the shock absorber turret. It's the black box with the wide multiplug bolted on the ABS pump. Will post a pic for you.

To remove the multiplug you need to insert a flat head screwdriver at the end D rind and pull it sideways. Then lift up the plug. There are videos for it, I'm pretty sure. Unbolting the ECU is pretty straightforward. All in all a 2 minute job Thumbs Up

When mine did this it was the steering angle sensor but didnt throw any codes up?

Nope, not this time. Battery is in great shape. Alternator as well.

Update:

Got a call from the shop, they confirmed the usual suspect connections had been broken loose. But, in addition, they also diagnosed a short which they will rectify and asked whether or not I've had past issues with my unit. Which I had not...The battery negative however had been loose for a couple weeks since I got her back from engine rebuild (found out while troubleshooting this fault). They said it could be a possible cause as current draw may spike over a loose battery connection...

We're now looking at Thursday morning.

Once more, it seems that nothing's easy with the L322 Censored
Ecu shop called to tell me that the module isn't salvageable as the short they'd found yesterday has affected a part that can't be sourced. So now they ordered a pre-owned pump+module set from Germany with one year warranty from which we'll be using just the module.
But, to be on the safe side, I'll need to have the precharge pump itself tested before plugging it to the new module.
Can the precharge pump somehow be tested in situ or does it need to be removed? I'm mostly concerned about a short etc. If doable, I'd be grateful to have the forum's advice.
If it needs to be removed for the testing I'll just remove it and bring it to the shop myself.

Got the replacement ABS module today. They said they didn't have time to fit (!) normally a 2 minute job for 6 bolts and 2 plugs (no coding needed according to them) and I would have had to wait till Thursday just for that... So I said the hell with it, I'll do it myself.

But...

Although I've calibrated the steering angle sensor.
All live data and sensors values are working, precharge pump working (thankfully) as well, all tests pass,

ABS coding error is present, so basically no ABS.

This is getting frustrating. It turns out it needs coding after all. And I specifically asked them to make Censored sure it came from a V8 petrol and NOT a TD6! They insisted they're doing these things all the time and they're all the same V8s and TD6s Laughing go figure. Kept Thursday's appointment although not keen on leaving the car with them. So I booked her also with my regular garage tomorrow, too. Whoever fixes it first...
Anyway, we're getting there I guess.

My garage was able to code the ABS module in minutes Bow down
All systems working now Thumbs Up
Won't have to visit those ecu muppets on Thursday Mr. Green

Any progress with yours?
If you can find one from a 4.4 V8 petrol, it should be a straight swap; no coding needed.
Several on Ebay and I certainly regret not having ordered one by myself in the first place. But I thought why wait when I can get mine fixed in a day or two for the same money. Never thought the ECU "specialists" would be so incompetent. Worst service ever.
