Poor dip beam

Hi,

I have a 2004 RR Vogue TD6 L322. The High beam is an H7 and the Dip beam, a Xenon. When on High beam, both the H7 and Xexon light up. They are both very bright but the H7 is still slightly yellow (This is a brand new Osram bulb). When on dip beam only, the light is very dim. Is this a design feature? At night, I cannot see any hotspots on the road, just moderate light. I have looked into the xexon housings and all are clean. I did see a large, white cone in each unit. What is this for? How do I increase the dip beam illumination?

Regards

Gary

Are they the original bulbs? I find Xenon’s deteriorate over time (they did on my last car, not sure if that’s a general thing) it got to the point that when I was diving in dipped beam I was continually being blinded by oncoming traffic. Some new HID bulbs fixed that.

The large, white cone is (I think) a ball joint that fixes the reflector so the two adjusters can move the reflector horizontally and vertically. Can the ballast resistor be changed for different values?

Hi Monkeyman,

They could be originals. I bought her second hand. On high beam, the xexons are very bright.

The light is always the same on the Xenons, it doesn’t change from high to low beam, there is just a shutter used on dip so you don’t blind oncoming traffic.

Not particularly helped your issue I know…. I too understand the bulbs degrade over time.

A mechanical flap? Is this operated by a solenoid? Perhaps the flap may be adjusted? I'll have a look in the rave manual

Yeah. If you flick from low to high beam without the engine on, you might be able to hear it. Ignition on… obviously.

Not got Rave anymore as not got an early car now.

I’m no expert on how it works. The halogen units are there as the Xenons don’t react fast enough for the “flash” facility….

I would be tempted to fit new bulbs. If you get them from Amazon or Halfords or similar with a fairly ope. Returns policy then it should be easy enough to take them back if that doesn’t solve the problem.

My experience of xenon’s deteriorating was on a 2005 Jaguar X350, which had a similar JLR lighting setup with different bulb types for main and dipped

My car is now 16 years old and has over 80,000 miles on it. No sign of headlights deteriorating! Previous cars:

Ahha! Engine off, ignition and lights on. Toggling between dip and main beams and you can really hear the two flaps banging up and down.

I'll look at modifying these.

Headlamp Adjustment - I set the lights on main beam, aimed at a wall. The hot spots are quite high so I rotated the vertical and horizontal adjusters (on both light units) using a 6mm allen key. The adjusters rotated freely but the light patterns did not move. Anyone else experience this problem?

Cheers

Gary

I’d be tempted to not start messing about with the aim- MOT issues and the flaps for high beam….
Look at either replacing the bulbs for what should be in there or a different colour temp- e.g 5000k, for a bright crisp white light, it’ll be something simple like old bulbs and as mentioned have deteriorated over time 2009 (2010 MY) 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography

On full beam, the xexon bulbs are incredibly bright and provide a very long beam in country roads. But dipped (shuttered) they do provide a large area of illumination of the road and roadside but at too low a level of illumination. I need decent hotspots on the road ahead and left hand kerb. I now have to drive with the fog lights on to see the left hand kerb with decent clarity.

As an experiment, I have lowered the xexon headlights by 4 turns of the adjuster. I'll see what happens tonight.

It sounds as though your headlight beams are set too high. Lowering them will improve things but would be better set up correctly either against a garage door or wall. You could even go to your local mot garage when they are quite and ask them to check / reset them. I don’t think you will get “hot spots” on dip beam with xenon’s but the light level should be more than adequate. Certainly l have no issue.
