I was happily bombing along in the L322 when all of a sudden I had a scraping followed by crunching noise and out the back saw one of the belly pans had come off, it looked like below...I'll take a look under her later but is this something you would say I should replace? I'm guessing the reason why it came off is either the connections are rusted through or it wasn't fitted tightly to start with

Looks like the bolts were finger tight after an oil change? I would refit with new bolts and Penny washers. Torque it up to spec, and carry on regardless.

For clarity, my piece is actually in a few bits as it broke when it came off....I was just wondering if it is something I should be worried about replacing?

It protect to the engine sump and other bits from road debris flicking up etc

It has various functions that you can decide if you need or not - none critical - lol :

Reduces water / mud being sprayed around the engine / engine bay when you hit big puddles.
Absorbs minor oil leaks (if foam still on the topside)
Reduces spread of leaking oil by collecting it out of the airflow underneath
Minor reduction in engine noise transmission outside the car
Very minor improvement in aerodynamics / airflow under the car

Many owners are happy to live without any of the "benefits" to speed up oil changes / access underneath or just because it was taken off & lost by previous owners / "mechanics". Paul,

Had a look underneath for the first time ( only had her a couple of week)...all looks pretty good under there from a rust perspective.

The mountings for this undertray look OK so it think it must have just been loose !!.....one thing I did notice though was more than a little bit of oil at the back part of the engine area .....not dripping but also not just a small amount.....I'm guessing this could be a sign of the oil cooler leaking. Any way to check short of taking off the bits in-between the Vee ?

I have a 4.4 tdv8 for reference.....I feel the start of some fun🤣

Keep a close eye on the coolant expansion tank for signs of oil.
