Aircon compressor replaced and system regassed, now all working well. I’ve done 500 miles in the last couple of days, very happily apart from the 18mpg...

I really like this variant, particularly all the colour coding, it would be nice to see some interior photos some time. Holland and Holland Range Rover By Overfinch

In next week for a set of replacement air sus bags. It has taken a while to source the Dunlop bags. Looking forward to no longer having a saggy bottom. Next job is the headlining. Then an underseal. I’m planning to take her on the annual ski trip instead of the D5 😬

New sus airbags are done but the sinking feeling has got worse. I suspect in doing the work the pipes have been moved. Worst case is the air reservoir is in need of replacement - they are quite exposed I guess. Back to the garage.....

Yesterday she went to Nationwide Trim in Redditch for a new headlining. Trevor and the guys there did a great job, really pleased.

In to 4x4 Development today for a full service (incl gearbox) and a few little jobs to sort:

1. Glovebox ram not connected, drives Mrs H mad
2. Ashtray spring missing so not opening the little silver lid, which rattles like mad
3. Wiper banging into the pillar when travelling at 70mph, enough to drive you mad
4. Roof bars fitted so we can fit the roof box for ski trip, I think I must be mad.

Yes in theory I could have fiddled and done all of those, but flat out with work / hedge planting / kids sport etc.

It was all going well, all jobs done and just waiting for new (non aero) wipers, when disaster struck. Dave called me to ask if I had a spare key, which I duly popped over, but the ignition barrel was stuck and the steering lock on, the RR on the ramp.... The method of removing the ignition barrel relies on being able to turn it and apply a special tool, so at the moment it is stuck. No doubt Dave will crack it soon enough. I'm just glad it went now and there not in a few weeks time in the Alps.

Deep joy, a new ignition set required…barrel, drivers side lock, glove box lock and two key blades….LR can’t help at all so an eBay purchase has been made. Fingers crossed 🤞

Thanks Geoff, much appreciated. I enjoy trying to keep her in decent condition by keeping on top of the little things. There will inevitably be something about to go wrong on a 21 year old LR, but hopefully nothing major!

Roof bars fitted. I was lucky enough to pick up these original items for not a lot:

She is in desperate need of a clean, but I’ve got a couple of days shooting ahead so it can wait.

Replacement ignition barrel / door lock / glove lock box now fitted. Key blades swapped and all working well. Phew. Roof bars are now off as I couldn't get the roof box fittings on. Still needs a good clean inside and out but getting there.

Trip to the Alps completed. The chalet was great:

The door to door trip was 1662 miles:

The mpg was 16.4. I drove at a steady 70-75.

We did the drive out overnight in one hit from Calais but stopped at Troyes on the way back. Traffic was pretty poor on the way back, I’d forgotten about the standard Saturday changeover bottleneck.
I used a cheap and cheerful Bluetooth cassette to listen to music and R4 via the standard stereo. It worked ok but I’d like to get a hidden Bluetooth adapter fitted.

Fuel costs were about £700. I’d definitely take the RR again simply because it is nice place to be on a long journey.

Nice trip. Where did you go to?

I went to St Anton in my 2002 TD6. 4 up, never missed a beat. So relaxed I ski the day we arrived!
