4.4 TDV8 - Stage 1/Economy/Custom Re-map / TDI Tuning CRTD4

I get my car back from accident repair in a few weeks time and am looking to buy it a little present following it's operation to make it feel better.

I've read through all the previous posts on the subject and the recommended re-mappers (BAS, JE, Quantum, Celtic, [can't remember the other one beginning with A]).

My goal is smoother, more instant power delivery and increased economy - not necessarily more power - the thing still goes like stink when towing. My 'nice to haves' are a switchable map and manual switch on/off the second turbo (simply because I don't think the engine needs it so, would like the actuators to only open on demand). I would like to upgrade to an L405 when I have the money.

I've been looking at either a stage 1, economy or custom map (so the 2nd turbo can be made switchable) or TDI Tuning have a very good name in the industry with their CRTD4 box which they load on various vehicle specific maps and provide wiring looms for - their chief engineer is an ex-powertrain engineer. My concern is any map which increases torque output, as the engine is already limited to the maximum rated torque for the ZF 8HP70.

But also as a left wing option, how about paying GAP and updating all the ECU softwares?

What are people's experiences? I couldn't see any mention of TDI Tuning in the forum but my brother does have their kit on his SDV6 F-Pace. Does even such thing exist to be able to introduce switchable turbo functionality with a map? Which am I best to go for? 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

If the power delivery isn't smooth and instant and the economy is down maybe look at possible causes (Have you cleaned your MAP sensor ?) as I've got no complaints about mine in either of these areas. Also I've got an easy fix for disabling the 2nd turbo and saving fuel- just don't rev past 2.5k rpm! as max torque is already there at 1500rpm. If you do want a remap I doubt you will get more mpg unless it changes the laws of physics. These cars are pretty economical once moving but there is no way of getting 2.7t up to speed without using a lot of fuel. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I was a sceptic until I used a DTUK box in direct comparison on the rolling road and in everyday driving. Then I got to know the company and the owner behind the company and the source of their products and distribution. Proper TüV certified products, and automotive looms. Great base maps, and they made me a specific one for my specific needs and car when towing the powerboat. It become so popular in the scene that it made it as a standard optional map.

Sadly my supercharged isn’t the car for their products but otherwise I would without a doubt. Quality shops like blackboots in Chesham are resellers. And with together with respectable Litchfield tuners they were the first to get the Yaris GR stuff on the road. A small marker and nearly all of them run that now.

I hit 11.87s on Santa pod in my otherwise standards Golf R five door hatchback 🤣

They didn’t fit two turbos for fun, it’s a fairly involved system - just drive everywhere under 2400 rpm if you don’t want the smaller turbo spinning...

The GAP IID tool will give you access to BAS tuning products which also include gearbox updates and other things that may improve your drivability - worth dropping them a line to discuss what you want. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

That's stout... my bone stock, full weight DSG 3-dr Mk7 R has a best 1/4 mile of 12.7 at Pod on a fully prep'd track. Andrew.

Yes it was good. The thing went, all it had was the DTUK tuning box and pedal box, a bit so heavy driver and good launch control. TV was 119mph iirc. Amazingly stable tuning it was. My R was one of the first when it launched into the UK. It was a fun car but wore me out on longer journeys.

If I had a diesel L322 I would definitely take the DTUK tuning boxes. On the Navara I used for towing I got a sustained 24% improvement in fuel economy as well. I wasn’t fussed about that, just wanted to get rid of the flatsport between 1750-2000RPM.

Do the tuning boxes work or do harm? I'm not talking about cheap ones, I'm talking about the DTUK and TDI Tuning ones which are c.£400 and come with their own looms.

Another remapper I forgot to mention is Mapro in Portsmouth. They use a proper rolling road. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Consensus is to avoid tuning boxes like a dose of clap. Remap only. Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Tuning boxes definitely work. They work very well, and even receive TüV approval for use on roads.

So no, there is no consensus. And there are very few custom maps. Most all lead to the same file anyway and are just loaded on your car. Creating a proper bespoke map is very very expensive, and yes that one can be better but those are made for a specific purpose. The fast majority of “custom” remaps are very generic and cover the same if not similar parameters. I mean ultimately there only so much that can be adjusted.

It’s a shame that so many peoples experience with tuning boxes are the eBay specials linked to a Maf by potentiometer or worse attached to boost the signal of the fuel pressure by potentiometer with no further inputs. A world apart from a proper tuning box.

I thought the consensus on mapping the 4.4 tdv8 was that the car is already running very near the torque limit of the gearbox and if you are looking for extra power use a JLR specialist like Alive or Bell Auto Services who will know this and accommodate

They will only harm your wallet. If the ECU gets a whiff of anything being too far out of spec it will throw you a restricted performance warning and end your fun. Tuning boxes were great for old diesels where you could just over fuel and leave a cloud of black smoke behind you but once DPF's came in the parameters to fool the ecu into creating more power are limited. If you do go for a remap I'd strongly advise a specialist LR tuner as they will have the experience to know not just how to create power but also how to maintain DPF function. I'd expect a proper retune to also include changes to the gearbox programming as well for optimal drivability and economy. Even just a gearbox reprogram on it's own would likley help. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Depends on the box and the application. Had a DTUK box on an twin turbo car a while back and it was rubbish - fixed with a proper remap. Agree all remaps are not the same either and having done some DIY ECU remapping in the past and seen how little is changed on commercial off the shelf maps for so much charged it's ez money. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
