Cracked side skirt after jacking incident…

So after a jacking incident last year my side skirt is cracked and has come away from the car.

I’ve been quoted for a replacement, but not looking to spend that money just yet… at least not on that part of my car at this time!

What can I do to repair it? I’m not looking for a perfect finish, just looking to join it back together. Given where the cracks are, it shouldn’t be very noticeable… certainly less than the side skirt being missing.

Also, I’ll need new clips to fix it back to the car. What are they called and what type are they? Just so I have 1/2 chance of ordering the right ones… Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Price is ouch!!!!! sorry.

Clips and fixings on the same page. Just ensure I've got the correct model year.

Not sure if cleaning with IPA (isopropyl alcohol at least 90%) and a suitable plastic superglue would work. Depends if the glue takes, you'd need to test its strength of bonding on a small lenghth of the crack. Cheers

If there is room underneath with it in place, you could glue a strip of reinforcing plastic behind the side skirt. It would serve to hold the split parts together and also strengthen the joint.

You might need several strategically placed strips. John

You could try welding it with a soldering iron. I did my bumper a few months ago, can't tell that it's been split and it's still together.

Weld on the back side. Identify and cut off strips of plastic from a place where they won't be seen and don't affect the strength of the panel. Clean the edges and about 10mm either side, I used brake cleaner, nail varnish remover is good. Pull and clamp both pieces together. Use the soldering iron to melt the plastic each side whilst feeding in the filler strips.

By the time you have completed it you will be an expert.

Cheers Weegie, FJ12Jagmen and Diesel Dave.

I have a soldering iron so will give that a go first. There’s no strength needed in the joints so a simple fix at the back should suffice. If necessary, those kits on Amazon can help especially with the staples.

I’d never have considered snipping a bit of unseen plastic to use as glue! Thumbs Up Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

I have a pair and one side has a small crack in... Which side is damaged on your car?

Cheers Craig!
That was the drivers side now on the garage floor, but the other side also has some damage so ultimately they both need to be changed.

THAT broken skirt was from simply jacking the car up using the crappy scissor jack. It doesn’t fit the jacking point hole! Big Cry

Which side is the good skirt you have? And how bad is the other side? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

So I finally got to a stage where I was able to refit my side skirts (I’ll post more on that later on another thread) so decided to give the plastic welder a go… and will say I am bloody impressed!

Not the prettiest of jobs but the repair is where you cannot see so not bothered by that. As you can see the pin melts into the plastic and when set it’s fairly strong. I’ve used plenty of clips on both side skirts and late last night I fit them back on the car.

I paid £13 from eBay and am happy with that. Bargain Thumbs Up Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

There’s a bit of road rash exposing the primer at the front and a few other wear and tear marks. I’ll probably get it resprayed and corrected as part of that at some point. Any decent body shop should be able to do something. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8
