Steering Column Tilt Broken

Not just not moving but completely floppy. The tabs on the adjuster have broken off.

Anyway, I've ordered a new column - £150 eBay thankyou V much. In the mean time I've "modified it" so the adjuster is on the other side (last pic). It wont move up or down and is stuck in the up position.

Think so. Will take it to my indy as I really don't fancy that job.

Homefully will make a few bob from my old column. May even look at re-designing the weak components like the motor clips or these evil tabs...

I had the same problem on mine afew months back. Luckily the warrenty company paid out. Would have been near the £900 to get in done and that was with my old column as a swap. Indy told me near £1600 for a brand new fitted.

Dan is the new column that you have ordered the updated version? LR updated the columns to stop this common problem. The newer one's have a longer brass spindle so it want "over screw' and snap that little metal stopper. The only down side to the updated column is that the steering wheel no does not tilt as much as it did due the the brass spindle being larger so wont turn as much. Its only a very slight difference but enough for the wife to notice Shocked

Anyway £150 for a column on ebay is a bargain Thumbs Up

They be my photos....

The tabs can easily break especially if anyone leans on the steering wheel when they get out.

Very poor design to have to replace the whole column and not just the broken tabs Sad

Cost me £90 labour to get a new one fitted (3 hours work) but all worked ok after that. L322 2002 4.4 V8 LPG

Sorted now:

£150 Used Steering Column (part# QMB000160)
£50 Labour

The column was taken from a 2009 car, marked as NAS spec, it all worked although the steering angle sensor needed swapping over.

You can bodge it as I did above, then set a saved search on eBay for Range Rover Steering Column and as soon as one comes on buy it. They go from 100-200 depending on whether they are used or newish.

Ring these guys, they are the ones got mine from, he may have some left:

As above, I paid £50 to have mine replaced, so I wouldnt expect to pay more than £100 for fitting.

Thanks for that Dan, i have just phoned him, alas he is a Jaguar dealer, and had to buy some RR bits as a job lot with Jag bits. He is now sold out and unlikely to get any more.

So now i have a feeling this is where i shall get stuffed, i will no doubt get charged 12 grand for a column plus 2 grand labour. I kid you not, they just always see me coming. Sad Thumbs Up

There was one on the other day as a buy it now for £200ish. They do come up.

Like I said, bodge it so its safe, thats a relatively easy job in comparison.

Thanks Dan i have just bodged it, it is obviously a weak link ,as it appears so many snap. I would expect a far stronger design.

Have phoned loads of places, and made loads of on line searches, nothing as yet.

Onwards and upwards. Thumbs Up
