RR problems no drive

I've recently purchased a range rover 4.4 petrol, I've purchased it very cheap because of the no drive problem, the engine runs beautifully, but when gear's are selected nothing happens, when selecting the gear's it shows up on the dash but like I said no drive, there is one thing I noticed on the dash today is that the 4x4 light was on the dash, I tried turning the switch off but nothing happens (light still on the dash) and when gearbox is put back into park position there's a slight crunch as it goes into park.
Hopefully someone can help, I'm new to RR.
Many thanks in anticipation kind regards Clive.

What year is it Clive? It’s the BMW 4.4, which can have gearbox issues, if it’s knackered then there a few recommendations for places which will refurb or replace transmissions (from memory Bristol transmissions were recommended by another member).

I’m no expert they’ll be along in a bit 😂

Out of interest have you checked transmission fluid levels? And is there any record of the gearbox being serviced?

4x4 light? It’s permanent 4 wheel drive… I take it you mean the low range light, the one that looks like mountains?

Could be stuck going into or out of low range. That is the transfer case, though from the age of the car, it’s a long shot, as a few have had gearbox issues by that time…

It was first registered in September 2002 and I believe it's the 4.4 BMW engine. I haven't checked the gearbox oil level yet and I'm not fit enough to go crawling around underneath car's anymore.
I'll see if I can get someone to have a look for me but if that turns out to be ok then I'll just get rid of it, I only gave scrap money for it anyway.
Do you think that could be the reason it won't come out of 4x4 mode.
Regards Clive

It’s always 4x4. It’s impossible to make it anything else. I think it’s stuck half in Low range….. unless that’s what it does as a symptom of the gearbox being dead.

Replacement gearbox prob about £1500 odd…. But as you say, probably best to get a proper diagnosis and then make a choice as to what you do next. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

The car never came with any service records so haven't really got a clue and I can't get any information from the previous owner as he's had a stroke and can't speak very well and yes your right it's the light that looks like a mountain and it's stuck on permanently.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Kind regards Clive

car running..put car in neutral, foot on brake, and pull the left switch on the console, with mountain symbol, it should go back to high range. if not, it might be a stuck transfer box stepper motor. not hard to change. if you bring up the revs, does it sound like the gearbox is spinning up and dropping through the gears? as you say it crunches when put into park... sounds like something is spinning. there is also a fuse you insert to make car sit in neutral (ie no drive) for towing it short distances... it might have been recovered and 'recovery fuse' still fitted.
ive just sold my old 2002 v8, with a broken gearbox! I doubt its my one, because mine was making a horrendous front gearbox pump noise. you can find secondhand gearboxes around the £400 mark. A bit of a gamble, but for scrap money car, maybe if you can find a willing fitter...

Thanks for your advice, I'll get my son-in-law to have a look for me, I think you could be right about the fuse as the car must have been towed but I can't ask the guy I purchased the car from as he's had a stroke and has lost his speech, will let you know how I get on.

A big big thanks to all that have given me advice on my old L322 problem, you were right about fuse number 37 car now engages gear's and low range light has now gone off.
I do have another 2 problems with the air suspension and also with the steering adjustment not working at all seems to be stuck in low position making it difficult to get in and out of the car. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in anticipation Clive

I think there maybe separate threads on both of these topics. If you use the search function it should bring them up.

On the suspension it’ll be either knackered bags or the air compressor not working.

On the steering……no idea! When you try the adjustment control is it dead or is there the noise of an electric motor engaging?

When I bought my RR (the same as yours) the suspension was on the rocks.
You cannot do much your self, with out a diagnostic tool.
I bought a icarsoft and cleared the air suspension fault and up came the suspension. RR 2005 4.4 petrol
