check battery condition if ok do a battery reset..

Thanks, I'll check the battery as suggested. I guess the battery could be on the way out as the radio station resets after each start, but I noticed today that it if I just turn the ignition on (without starting the car) the preset station comes on.

your 4.2 is easy to start but the electronics are really voltage sensitive...

Looks as if your battery is on its way out. Running it flat won't have helped. Try charging it and leaving it overnight disconnected to see what you get as a voltage reading. John

OK, but doesn't disconnecting the battery cause other issues?

Well re-setting the clock isn’t a big issue and you have to turn steering lock to lock with the engine running to re-set it but, apart from that, no issues .

So I've removed my battery and charged it and it took the charge well and passed the charger's checks.

To do a battery reset you disconnect it and hold the ends of the battery leads together positive to negative for a few seconds. Has the effect of discharging the ECUs so that when you reconnect the battery it is starting from afresh, as it were
