Sat Nav issues

Hi All

I'm new to Range Rovers having bought my 2007 Supercharged a couple of weeks ago.
All is well with the car and I am absolutely loving it - just a couple of little issues.
As mentioned in my first thread where I introduced myself, I will be asking for help and advice as I go along, please bear with me!

So, first up - sat nav.
I have the touchscreen. The sat nav loads, but it goes to an existing route and I can't change it. I can't add a new address/destination. I have tried resetting it to factory settings, but it still does the same. I've put in a new sat nav DVD unit and that was no good. I've tried cleaning the DVD - no change. Tried a new disc and that didn't work. On the screen in the top left it has a red line through the 'GPS' - see picture. At one point I managed to put my home address in, but that has now disappeared.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Is it likely to be my GPS antenna?
Or the DVD itself?
Or the sat nav DVD player?

There are a few other electrical gremlins (radio and rear screen DVD player) and I'm not sure if they are related. I was going to put those in a separate thread at some point.

Thanks
Roger

GPS antenna.
You can get them from the breakers or on Ebay.
As mentioned the guide to change out is in the Wiki!!
It's not too technical!!

Thanks for the reply. I've found a couple and I've watched a video for replacing it and I'm comfortable with that.

Fingers crossed!

OK, I changed the antenna for a brand new Land Rover part.

I've still got the red line through the GPS words top left of screen and still the saem issues with the sat nav.

Any pointers as to what else it could be?

Roger

Thanks, I'll check the battery as suggested. I guess the battery could be on the way out as the radio station resets after each start, but I noticed today that it if I just turn the ignition on (without starting the car) the preset station comes on.

What is the best way to check the battery?

The nearside rear cubby appears to be nice and dry - I've swapped the sat nav DVD player for another one - and back again - a few times!

I have just checked my battery and got the following results -

Voltage after being sat overnight - 11.66 volts
Voltage on cranking engine - 9.33 volts

Doing some research people seem to suggest standing voltage should be 12.4 - 12.7V and cranking should be 9.6V.

Has anyone any thoughts on this?

The car is quite new to me - about 2 weeks. I did have it checked over by a specialist before buying and they said the battery was OK.
Since buying I noticed that the clock reset after each start and the radio lost its programme on restart. The clock seems to have sorted itself out now, but the radio still resets. The car turns over really well - and quickly, although once it was dead, but that was after a day of trying the DVD player and sat nav all day without starting the car (ignition on). I put that down to me draining the battery with it being used on and off for a long period of time. The spare key doesn't charge in the ignition.
The car could have been stood for a while before I bought it.

Any ideas?
Is my battery dead or dying or do you think it's OK?

Thanks
Roger

your 4.2 is easy to start but the electronics are really voltage sensitive...

its a process of elimination and the battery seems a good place to start. ... - .- -.

Looks as if your battery is on its way out. Running it flat won't have helped. Try charging it and leaving it overnight disconnected to see what you get as a voltage reading. John

OK, but doesn't disconnecting the battery cause other issues?

I have a decent battery charger so I can do that, just worried about disconnecting it. Mind you if it was dead i suppose it is effectively disconnected anyway.

Well re-setting the clock isn’t a big issue and you have to turn steering lock to lock with the engine running to re-set it but, apart from that, no issues .

Follow the procedure in WIKI (top of the page) John

OK, thanks John. I'll do that tomorrow and see how we go. I'm really good at setting the clock now Wink

Thanks for the help.

So I've removed my battery and charged it and it took the charge well and passed the charger's checks.

Replaced the battery and reset my clock, but nothing else has changed by the looks of it.
Sat nav still the same and the radio still loses its setting after switching off.

Stan mentioned earlier about doing a battery reset - how do you do that? I can't seem to find anything relating to that online.

I'll check the voltage at the battery in the morning after its been on the car overnight.

Any more thoughts on what might be causing my sat nav to play up like this? Could it be a dodgy battery - would that make it do this?

Thanks
Roger

To do a battery reset you disconnect it and hold the ends of the battery leads together positive to negative for a few seconds. Has the effect of discharging the ECUs so that when you reconnect the battery it is starting from afresh, as it were
NOTE is the leads to the battery you touch together not connecting the battery terminals .

You didn’t say what voltages you were getting after charging the battery. Also did you let it stand for an hour or so after disconnecting the charger? John

Thanks John

I'm OK with holding the ends of the leads together - and not the terminals Wink I have read and seen videos about that, but nobody really described it as resetting the battery. Thanks for the clarification.

I haven't measured the voltages yet - I was going to do that after it had stood overnight.

And I didn't let it stand for an hour or so after disconnecting the charger - my instructions didn't mention that. Out of interest, what does that do?

Is it worth me disconnecting the battery tomorrow and touching the leads together to discharge the system, or haver I missed the boat on that?

Sorry if I'm being a bot dumb with this, but I'm used to older cars than my FFRR with less things to go wrong!

Roger
