L405 oil cooler oil leak down back of engine

Hello all,

After many hours removing false firewalls and the inlet plenum I got to the oil cooler assy. I removed the top cooler held in place by Torx screws and found a fossilised seal. I still have to remove the plate with the oil filter on after taking out the pipe with O rings at rear LHS. My question is do I replace the whole assy or just the gaskets bearing in mind it has been a very difficult job thus far. Also down the RHS of the cooler is a pipe with a right angle bend and very tight spring clips on. I was able to remove spring clips but the pipe broke with a sharp crack lower down. Not sure what pipe this is? I live quite remotely in the south of New Zealand so it may be better bite the bullet and just put on a new genuine cooler assy. Thoughts?
Many thanks in advance. Vehicle has done 160,100 kms

When mine went on my 4.4 TDV8, they found that the cooler had also warped a bit, so needed to be replaced anyway. Others have just replaced the gasket with success. I would have hoped that JLR might have fixed the issue on the L405 at some point, but don’t know if they ever did….

I had to have the coolant flushed a number of times to get the oil out. So you might need to check the coolant has not been contaminated too. You might have caught it early enough.

I’m pretty sure there is a guide to replacing the cooler in the Wiki, top right…. It’s for the 4.4 in the L322, but yours can’t be much different?

They can warp. Fit a whole new one.

Hi DrRob,
Thanks for the info about Advance factors. Stuff is very expensive here generally so even one filter kit would pay for itself and shipping. 2 sets and I would be quids in!
