How To: 2011 Range Rover Remote Smart Key Fob Upgrade

Given I have just done this, I thought I'd post a how to guide for anyone looking to upgrade their remote to the 2014 style (I personally don't like the 2020 style - it looks like the 2011 style. The 2014 style is so much smaller).

Time required: 15 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
Tools required: small flat bladed screwdriver, file or a dremel tool with sander attachment

Step 1. Get your fobs ready

I bought genuine shells and chrome metal sides from a Land Rover dealer because there's reports the buttons can rub off on the fake versions. A fake version can be picked up for £7-10. A genuine remote shell and chrome side cost me £30 a set. Worth it when a genuine one will typically last 10 years. The part number is C2D49508. You'll need to make sure you're ordering the fob and chrome side.

If you don't fancy mucking around calling dealers, the Land Rover main dealer in Plymouth sells them on eBay. If the item number expires, here's their store address also:

Step 2. Release your old key shell

Do the usual to flip open the spare key and press the little black tab down at the top of the remote to release the left side, as if you were going to change the battery. You may find the screwdriver helpful to free it. Now remove the battery.

Step 3. Open the key shell

Do this by finding the side of the remote which comes free and gently levering each corner equally with the screwdriver (as not to snap anything). It will eventually come out of its guide holes and simply pull off.

You'll see the PCB. It simply lifts out with no force. Put this to one side.

Step 4. Release the spare blade

The spare sits on a shaped cog that locks into place. Push the spare blade gently against the spring and pull it. It simply pulls out but, only when in this position.

Step 5. The new fob!

Grab the new fob, push in the direction of the arrow and the metal side releases. You will see a small hole in the remote.

Insert the key blade (not the screwdriver!) and firmly twist. The key blade is wider than a screwdriver and distributes the load better. The fob will snap open.





Step 6. Insert and adjust the PCB

Don't be afraid. This step is a doddle.

If I put the PCB into the key shell, you'll see it almost exactly matches but, note in the circled area, it's against the key shell but, it needs around 1.5mm space for the key shell to snap back together. So, this is the area which needs a minor trim.

Use the file or the dremel to sand this edge of the PCB by 1-2mm. It will take no longer than 15 seconds with a dremel or a few minutes with a file. Once done, put the PCB back in the remote and it should look like this:

Excellent. You're almost done!

Step 7. Put the shell together

**Insert the battery! You might as well put a new battery in at this point. They're CR2032**

The shell simply snaps together. Be firm but gentle.


Step 8. Insert the key blade

It slides into the little metal contraption blade first.

Step 9. Slide the side on

Fit the top first and protruding about 3mm from the top of the remote. Swing in the bottom of the chrome side then firmly slide downward so the side is in line with the remote.

Step 10. Test and you're done!

Go and test all the functions are working on the remote and that the car will start before moving onto the next remote.

If all succeeds, you're done and have 2 lovely upgraded fobs which weigh less than half the old remote weight (I weighed the old shell and it was 68g on its own, completely empty. The new shell, with PCB inside, battery and key blade AND Key ring comes to 69g. This difference really feels noticeable in your pocket.).

Looks good. I too fitted an “upgraded” 2012 shell from Land Rover, and I’m disappointed to report that it’s falling apart again, just like the original one…..

I don’t throw it about…. I think it’s just the heat from being in your pocket…..

I guess it depends whether you buy genuine keys or not as well.

At the end of the day, genuine shells of the 2014 style are £15 and now I've done the conversion, can just change cases in future if and when they get tatty.

I'd give them a go instead of the original style remotes. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I've had my XFR for 3.5 years which has the newer style key. I've replaced the key shell twice now, actually, it might have been each key once, I can't remember...

The finish does start lifting on the corners of the newer keys as well.

I believe the newer JLR keys are all plastic. I wonder if that's been done due to the issues with the older keys.

Any good Auto locksmith can supply and fit the key blades. They're nothing specific. Your blade is likely a HU101 (2014 onwards type) or a HU92 (to 2010), depending on which remote. I'm not sure what code the 2010-2012 cars had.

It should cost £10-15 for a locksmith to cut and supply from your other blade. I would also call Land Rover and ask them how much to supply a blade - I once had to get one for a Mercedes which had no key blades with it at all and think it was only about £20. Just did this to refresh and old case, decided against the very newest key as when I was looking for a car someone had already upgraded it to the very latest key which I didn’t realise but I thought it was just a very cheap copy key.
