Front wheel bearings

Are these normally good for the life of the FFRRs, or do they occasionally need replacement at 100k miles, ish?
Was noticing a little bit of play in the offside front when changing pads recently, but no indication of any problem when driving.

Just changed my front offside wheel bearing, due to a droning noise I heard, but there was no visible play in the whole wheel assembly. Quite often the bearings last the life of the car, it seems to be pot luck.

Before you go for the bearing change, make sure you have no play in any suspension components, this can also cause some movement in the assembly.

Ah. That’s helpful. I have also recently noticed a droning noise, but didn’t put it down to the bearing.

As with any vehicle, some will fail and others won't. It depends on a lot of factors.

I replaced the nearside front on my old one at about 100k. The other side was perfectly fine. Kev

As for the 'droning noise' - Not loud, had to listen for it, drove the car on a country fast 'A' road, noise occurred whilst driving in a straight line, then on long sweeping bends where one bearing is more loaded.
Noise occurred during long left hand bends and disappeared on long right hand bends, in my case.

Part use of 'senses' and intuition told me it was the off-side bearing failing. Whistle
Another way to help with diagnosis is to do a test drive with the wheel centre caps removed and use a laser temp gun on the hub / assembly retaining nuts, there may be a temp difference but not much.

Hope this helps Thumbs Up
