L405 Randomly stuck in Park

Hello – looking for some help please

Just recently the gear selector started to randomly get stuck in park, the gear selector raises from the centre console as normal but wont allow me to select R N or D… we don’t get the ‘click’ when you press down on the foot brake. We don’t get this problem all the time it seems random, sometimes when the car is cold other times when the car is warm.

To correct the problem, we sometimes switch the car off/on but this doesn’t always fix the problem, other times it seems to ‘release’ from P after the foot brake has been pressed a few times or in most cases it seems to resolve its self and allows us to select R N or D. The stuck in Park doesn’t last more than 2-3 mins at worst and in most cases it fine within a minute or so.

I am concerned the problem might develop further and we are left stuck in park – any suggestions or help?

2014 Range Rover
80K on the clock
Serviced every year, last service was in August

I had a similar problem earlier this year, selector wouldn't move occasionally after start up. It then decided to fail properly when reverse was selected and wouldn't move back. Had to have a new Rotary selector solenoid installed. Mine probably caused intermittent problems for approx 2-3 weeks before kaput.

From what I know, the centre console was stripped out to gain access to the module itself. The part for mine was £680 I think (vin dependant apparently)

So once you factor in labour, it’s not a cheap fix.

Might be worth getting it plugged in before you make any decisions, you might be lucky and find a code pointing at a dodgy brake switch or something.

Just replaced mine over the weekend, purchased from island 4 x 4. Had to remove the Centre console cover, taking my time the job took six hours. Online there’s a video on how to remove the 2019 L405 console but it is slightly different to my 2015 main difference was 2015 has 2 screws plus clipped down and arm rest has a long pin. 2019 6 screws plus armrest screwed down.
If I was to do it again I reckon I can do in two hours.
Apparently there’s also an update for software that helps fix this issue. However I didn’t wanna mess around and be caught somewhere I have to leave the car. So I just replaced it.
When it was faulty, I could hear a solenoid trying to activate in the rotator unit every time I press the brake pedal but it would not release, it worked after day or two later however wasn’t willing to take the risk going forward. 2015 AB 5.0 Supercharged

Mine never made an audible noise whenever it was having a hiccup, just locked rigid.

Doesn't sound like a fun job (6hrs) Shocked

Thanks for the replies.. the update is - I parked up this morning and heard a 'double click' now the gear selector won't move for love or money but interestingly I don't hear anything when the footbrake is applied - I had the pads and discs replaced a month ago, just wondering if its related? I will let it have a rest overnight and try again but I am not holding out much hope.

My local indie garage, Andy Whites said failures on the L405 are rare compared with Evoques - anyway we'll see what tomorrow brings then arrange a lift and shift to Whites.

Couple of questions - anyone tried repairing the gear selector or is it unserviceable?

Also, a quick google showed perhaps buying a gear selector from a breakers might do the job? Anyone know any good breakers breaking L405s at the moment?

Final Update... the RR got towed away at lunchtime today and dropped off at Andy Whites. Andy did his magic and the car was ready for 4pm same day. Cant fault that, sadly though I am now an owner of an expensive paperweight aka a broken rotary gear selector Laughing
