I had both lower tailgate straps break on me at the same time while lying partly in the boot (messing with a wiring issue. 2006 3.6 TDV8).
Very annoying as the tailgate then dropped onto the bumper, putting 3 shallow dents in it (hopefully they’ll pull out ).

Removing the old straps & getting new replacements highlighted that the strap ends are supposed to rotate around each mounting bolt – something I’d never realised as they’re hidden under the rubber boots that cover the ends (& keep all the water in that causes them to rust & fail ).
The old strap ends had obviously rusted solid at some point in the distant past – with the straps pointing downwards at both ends as they spend most of their lifetime with the tailgate shut.
What this meant was that when the tailgate was open the strap ends were “bent”, even though the rest of the cable was straight & taut, so when I added my weight to the tailgate there was incredible side loading on the cable attachments – which then failed as they’d got very weak due to rust.

If your strap pivots are still able to move, I’d suggest the boots should be lifted up & the pivots should be lubricated & the cable attachment point coated in grease or similar to reduce the likelihood of corrosion, seizing & potential failure.

I took the new cable assemblies apart & greased everything copiously prior to re-assembling & installing.
Hopefully they won’t fail again during my ownership of the car !

I've noticed that one side (the nearside UK) of the hinge seems to have seized on both ends on ours. What are the part numbers for the replacement part? (I'll try copius amounts of Bilt Hamber Ferrosol first!)

Swapped out mine for new ones and coated the ends in grease.

Mt last one that I changed had rusted through in the middle, the ends looked OK but water had got inside the plastic sleeve and rusted out the wire...!!!

So if they look good on the ends, don't be fooled...  Pete

The strap on the right hand side is different if you have the damper mechanism fitted - due to the addition of the ball stud to the fastening bolt. This will apply to later cars and the many earlier cars that have had the damper mechanism added.

If you have no damper, both straps are the same LR038051
If you have the damper, the LH strap is as above & the RH strap is LR038048 (with the ball stud) Paul,

Great advice!... really appreciate the heads up.

Is this correctly assempled? I’m thinking the spacers are on the wrong side? Neither end rotates and the alignment looks all wrong!

Yes, as far as I know. Mine ( 2006 ) has been used as a seat for two people of at least 13 stone each for watching racing at Oulton Park - Never had any problems ( that was after fitting new straps, I hasten to add. )
