We’ve done 50 miles in the RR this weekend and I’m pleased to report the new gearbox is as smooth as a hot knife through butter and the transmission is nice and quiet.

I’ve been looking in the workshop manual to see how you remove the front diff but I can’t find anything. Got a horrible feeling you need to drop the subframe which means it’s unlikely I’ll be able to do the job myself. Sad

IIRC you just have to undo the engine mounts and jack it up 40mm or so to clear the front subframe, diffs bolted to the sump with 4 bolts... Thumbs Up Pete

I’ve been a bit slow updating this... It’s not that I’ve had 8 reliable days from the Range Rover 😂

After the heavy showers last week, well, more appropriately, monsoons! I noticed that the headlining in the Range Rover was wet and when coming to standstill water dripped onto the passengers seat from the B pillar. I decided to clear all the sunroof drains to hopefully cure the fault.

Fronts were easily done, sunvisors removed, grab handles removed and A pillar covers removed and I could just get my hand behind the headlining enough to reach the drain tubes. I pulled them off, attached the airline to them and blew 10 bar of pressure down them. After this, water flowed freely when I poured water from a jug into the sunroof tray.

The rears were a different story altogether. You cannot see the rear drain tubes from the top and from the rear they discharge water behind the wheel arch liners. I put the car on the ramp, removed the rear wheel arches and cleared the drains from the bottom up. Once I’d done that the water was flowing from the rears with no issues at all.

One thing that has always bugged me with this car was that when it switched to LPG the engine management light came on with a fault code for high fuel rail pressure. It also didn’t feel nice running on LPG either, it felt a bit strangled.

On older cars such as my P38 Range Rover there was a fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail. This regulated the fuel pressure and the fuel returned to the tank using a separate pipe. On the newer cars there is no pressure regulator, the pressure is regulated by the in tank fuel pump. When the car switched to LPG and closed the petrol injectors the fuel pressure would spike as you can’t just disable the fuel pump. This would then trigger the car to run with the EML on and it felt horrible.

There are two ways around this problem…

1. Wire the fuel pump so that it shuts off and then use an emulator to emulate the fuel pressure and confuse the ECU into thinking things were fine.

2. Install a fuel pressure solenoid. These are powered when the car switches to LPG and will bleed fuel above a set pressure and need a return to be plumbed into the fuel tank.

I had never found either of these on this car so I’ve only ever run it on LPG for a few journeys.

When removing the wheel arch liner on the rear right wheel I found a fuel pressure solenoid hidden in the rear quarter. When I touched the solder joints on the cables they fell apart in my hands. I cut the wiring right back, cleaned up the installation a bit, replaced a couple of sections of wire and then soldered them back up before wrapping them in heat shrink.

Now, when the car switches to LPG the EML stays off and the running on LPG is equally as good as it is petrol. If I covered the switch, I defy anybody to tell me what fuel this car is running on.

I had to use the trailer the other day to help a friend out so for the first time since I’ve had this car it got put on towing duties.



I needed to move a Citroen BX for a friend of mine. The RR on LPG ran beautifully whilst towing, performance was superb, handling was superb, the suspension and steering on this car are absolutely spot on.

The only thing that’s irritating me is the diff whine. The front diff was noisy when I got it but the rear diff appears to have gotten noisy recently for some reason. An hour on eBay this evening found me a pair of diffs. They’re both New Old Stock from Land Rover.

The front diff from Land Rover is £1,057. This picture from the eBay advert isn’t great.



The rear diff from Land Rover is £2,539.



The dealer who had them offered me the pair of them for £1100 inc delivery on a pallet.

I’ve also been keeping an eye out on eBay for genuine LR wheel bearings recently too. I’ve now got 3 of them so have ordered a 4th tonight. Whilst the shafts are out to do the differential swaps I’m going to replace all 4 wheel bearings and be done with it. It’ll have had a full drive train refresh then and will hopefully be as quiet as a new car as other then these transmission whines I’m really enjoying driving it.

Interestingly, on the box for the LR wheel bearings they say “Made in Germany”.



The bearings themselves however are branded FAG.



And are made in Slovakia.





Anyway, that’s all until my pallet arrives and then I’ll have even more to be keeping me busy!

Good bit of tinkering to get on with then….

I had my front bearings changed on my 07 and it was by all accounts a PITA….. I think the difficult part is actually getting the shaft out of the hub, but if you are having the diff off too then it might be a bit easier…. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I'm fed up with whining noises on the drive train and when I got the offer of these diffs at that price it seemed to good a deal to turn down. My front one doesn't seem to have enjoyed towing the other day either and something can be felt under my feet since doing it.

I just want this car sorted out now. Seems like I'm forever doing something and the wife is now getting fed up with it so am hoping after this it'll just work for a while!

And that's why I'm single mate. Don't have that worry of upsetting any females apart from those at work but any vehicle you buy that's pretty much older then 3 years is always gonna come with trouble

That is a brilliant deal on the diff's Shocked I wish I was that lucky !!

As for the bearings, companies like FAG, SKF seem to have bearing factories ALL over the world now, quality is usually very good wherever they are made, except China obviously.

Hopefully, when you get around to the boss's new kitchen, that should be more reliable. Whistle Thumbs Up

To be honest, I'm of the mindset now that I've come so far with it now I might as well make it perfect.

It's a car that cost me £2.5k in January. I've done a lot of work to it but none of what I've done would necessarily have been guaranteed not to be needed on one I'd paid £8k for.

I've spent a lot of time recently looking at 5.0 ones again, the way the used car market is just now, prices are high and again, I could have to do timing chains or a lot of work to one of them too so I've decided that I might as well keep this one for a while.

By the time I'm finished, this car will have had a brand new transfer box, brand new front and rear diffs, brand new rear driveshaft and 4 brand new wheel bearings so pretty much the entire drivetrain will be new so it'll hopefully give a few years of trouble free service!
