David I don't have side steps.

I don't get the noise when turning it's all the time (see video in thread) it also wont make any difference if I have the power on or off, it still makes the heavy knock which suggests to me that it's not drive shaft related. Suppose it could be the wheel bearings but if they have no play or roughness I don't see how they could make this loud knocking.

Does the Range Rover need to have the suspension calibrated after a strut is replaced? Range Rover 4.4 V8 Vogue

I really can't see why the suspension should need to be calibrated.

The height sensor comes of one of the arms, not the strut, so heights should be unaffected.

Not had the liner right out, but cant see anything obviously loose,and have looked A LOT!

Original height sensors used, so no calibration.

And even if the cal was off, one corner may sit a bit squint, but it shouldn't clonk!

Sorry to bother you but I have just been reading your posts from a few years ago and am also on the verge of a nervous breakdown due to incessant knocking from my Range rover suspension . Out of interest did you ever discover what it was as I to have changed just about every bush and link and still I have a noise which is getting progressively worse. Any help would be greatly appreciated cheers Neil

have to admit to not ready through this entire thread, but i have had on a couple of older cars, a problem, with the swivel bearing on the top of the front suspension strut, at the point where you can tighten, on top of the strut top under the bonnet, there is i think a cover you ping off to reveal a bearing and a sort of allen key socket. im not near my car at moment. too late going to bed now... i think a new strut goes through this bearing. you would need someone to bounce car really properly while you feel for any play. i dont remember what you call these, but they bolt to the strut and then three nylocs hold them to the inner wing
strut swivel joint?

Lovely to hear from you again!

Approaching the 4 year anniversary of this thread.

Decided the knock is a feature, not a fault and have learned to live with it.

Suspect now if the fix-it fairies ever glance over and magically make it go away, the silence will be disconcerting and I will yearn to have my knock back.

Just as a thought, knock seems to be reduced / eliminated by light braking, but whether that points to something in the crakes / calliper, or just a loading up of the front suspension, I'm not sure.

Didn't want to jinx it in December, but nearly a 87,000 miles and over 5 years since I started this thread, I can confirm that my thump has definitely gone.

So what was it?

Don't know.

Since the last update I have done 3 things, drop links (again), front left strut, (again) and finally lower ball joint (again), and it was only when I changed the ball joint that the noise finally went.

I think this is spot on.

When I started shotgunning bits at it, I bought the cheapest parts available, thinking there would be little variation in quality. Not sure that was sensible.

My gut feel now is that the struts can knock. Looking back at the thread, first set of lower joints did not fix it, but I reported a definite improvement (not perfect) when I put the first strut on.

I now think that strut knocked, but over the years and 1000s of miles the new (cheap) lower joint wore out, so when I put the second (OEM) strut on, the knock didn't go as it was now also the joint.

Finally, when I pit the second (OEM quality) joint on, all sources of knock were fixed.

I've taken a decision to not buy the cheap pattern parts anymore.

In summary, if chasing knocks I would suspect drop links first (had three sets of these now, but really easy to diagnose and fix), then the lower ball joint, but if nothing else obvious, by very suspicious of the struts, particularly if they may be non-original.

Wow mega thread - I have a near side light knock on mine all looks good underneath but struts are original so will be ordering some Delphis… if this doesn’t fix it I will get the ball joint and links too. Very insightful Current stable:
