Rusty brake joints

While working on my bushes, I’ve been taking Fisha’s lead and derusting my sub frame and arms ( mean suspension arms… although my arms are also covered in paint!).

Whilst there I also painted my metal brake lines where I could see them as an extra protection. Whilst there I spot this join…

Do I give it a good clean and paint for protection? Am I better off leaving it, or is it in need of replacement? Painting it seems the sensible option, but will that be a problem if I have to undo that bolt at a later date? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

You won't do any harm by cleaning and painting. If you do have to remove it in the future the paint will crack off, just make sure the spanner is fully on the nut before you try and undo it.

Cheers for the feedback kevinp.

I suspected it would be ok to paint them… just wanted to throw it on this forum should there be any “no don’t do that” comments Laughing Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

If those are the front flexibles, they were subject to a recall. If they haven’t been done on yours it would be worth exploring with your Main Dealer.

AFAIK there is no time limit. Mine were done here in France FOC, by a Main Dealer and my, originally Brit registered L322, was several years old at the time.

Thanks for the heads up…

This is the rear. I believe it has had the recall work done, but plan to investigate that when I start work on the front suspension bushings. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

DON'T PAINT THEM..... Take them off and replace them whilst your refurbishing your subframe sir... They run down the rear wishbones and they rot BADLY... So, it's about the right age for yours to be replaced... Whilst you're at it, check the rear brake pipes as they rot too!

Oh and if you want to paint the new ones? Why not Thumbs Up

Cheers Craig. I hear you… but chose the paint option for now. I’ve spent more money than I have at the moment (‘tis the birthday season for our families).
I do however take on board your advice about replacing them… just going to postpone that job.
I want to service the callipers at some point so will probably do those all at the same time. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Urgh… looks like a sooner rather than later job for those brake lines! I did take a picture but can’t find it… that’s odd…

I finished the LHS bush replacement so started on the RHS. Those pipes are even worse! I’m going to treat these for now too, but then off to Rob @ Duckworths for some prices after looking at what’s involved.

L322 repairs… makes me think of the “and theeeennn…..” scene from “Dude where’s my car” Laughing

I replaced both my rear flexi-pipes a few months ago and judging by the looks of yours, they look very similar to mine and I ended up having to cut them off, as you almost certainly won’t be able to split the pipes at the bracket without ruining it and then adding a new piece of the steel brake pipe (which was rusty) as well as replacing the spring clips that keeps the tension on the joint, as these get destroyed when you cut the pipe.

Not the worst job in the world, but awkward. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

Indeed they do!
Along with everything else on these cars! I was under the car until late last night cleaning off rust from the subframe before I clean and paint. There is a lot of rust Big Cry Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8
