Power steering fluid - clear up an arguement

Having 'discussions' with a colleague at work regarding power steering fluid for his TD6 hes recently bought. Hasnt been looked after but he got it for a steal. He ordered some PS fluid as it was low, ordered from ECP using their number plate option and it recommended:

https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/triple-qx-a...-522776082

Triple QX ATF Dexron II

When he opened it, and topped it up, the new fluid was red. When we checked his level the week previously, it was (admittedly very dark) green. Guessing never been changed since new (2004)

He's saying as it was recommended by ECP website, it'll be fine, I'm suggesting mixing them might not be a good idea

Who's right?

Mixing oils to me is only when an emergency occurs, to get you home, then change the oil.

From what you have said about the TD6, I would already be planning to change ALL the oils in that car 100% Pronto Thumbs Up

For what it's worth l think eurocarparts are wrong to list that product as suitable for use in L322 Td6s. It wouldn't be the first time they have listed items incorrectly.

Thanks guys - kinda what I told him. Plus do engine oil change, diffs and transfer box oils too along with the obvious filters etc

Is there a link anywhere on how to drain/change power steering fluid? Him using the wrong fluid is hopefully going to force him to change it completely sometime very soon

Thanks mjdronfield

He’s managed to get 1 litre of original LR cold climate fluid, could he get a litre of the equivalent Ravenol ccf and mix the 2, as long at they’re the same colour (bright green)?

My power steering fluid is all over the A66 in Cumbria !!!
Couldn’t tell you what colour it was, dark at the time the steering pump gave up !!
This was late last Friday, still waiting for Green Flag to bring the car back to North Notts, the joys of motoring, as they say !

Yes all 322's use the "Green stuff" and should NOT be mixed with red! As said above, this will kill the seals in your rack and that is £1000 + Shocked

So, deffo not worth risking Thumbs Up

Cam-Tech-Craig - likely to be early next week by the time his genuine LR stuff comes, is he ok leaving the mixed stuff in until he can do a fluid change, if it’s not driven anywhere?

Re my post above, and just hijacking this thread slightly, here’s me assuming it’s the steering pump that’s packed up. It was Lady Wogger who was piloting at the time, she said the steering went heavy, we pulled up straight away, and as I looked under the car, fluid was Censored out all over the tarmac.
Is my assumption correct? Or could it be something else?
Couldn’t really see too much coz it was dark, but there seemed to be fluid all over the steering fluid reservoir, down the front of the engine, and all along under the vehicle.
Any suggestions chaps?

I bought a 5 litre tub of power steering fluid for my L322 from Smith & Allen in Darlington.

https://www.smithandallan.com/products/tra...over-ace-/

It was delivered the next day and has been in my car for over 3000 miles now with no ill effects.

I'd top it up and get someone to start it and rock the steering gently whilst looking under the bonnet to see if you can see where it's coming from. There will be a high pressure pipe from the pump to the rack, there will also be a low pressure feed from the reservoir to the pump and a return from the rack to the reservoir. If the oil is all over the front of the engine it probably won't be the rack so it could be a pipe or the pump.

With oil leaking and a fan moving air around it'll blow oil everywhere so I'd try having a look with it topped up and running to see if you can spot the leak.

I’ll try that mate, that is when I get the Censored thing back. It was recovered by Green Flag, In Cumbria, and taken to Lancaster Rolling Eyes it’s sat in some recovery firms compound, they say there are no drivers available until the end of the week that can bring it down here to North Notts.
