Thats bad luck to find youcannot get it home. My local parts shop told me that Landrovers spec is a cover name for Citroen LHM oil. They use that in seventies Rolls royce brakes.

Just an update, my steering pump had gone awol, so a new one has been fitted, system flushed, which revealed metal bits had gotten into the rack. I’ve tried the vehicle, and the steering seems ok, BUT, there seems to be a slight noise occasionally when turning full lock.
Question is, have I damaged the rack, and would it be wise to replace it?
Cheers

The noise on full lock is normal on most cars. Most manufacturers advise not to hold more than twenty seconds on full lock.
I would flush the system through again after a few days of use. If the steering feels lumpy on turning corners, then you would have to look at the fluid reservoir, pump seals and rack valves. If it was my car, I would flush it through with Dexron 2, then with the more expensive fluid. THe cold climate fluid is only to achieve the manufacturers boast that it will function at minus 40 degrees centigrade. I used to do aircraft certification, genuine parts was a gold mine for manufacturers.

THe rack will be Ok as it is power assisted. The hydroulics are seperate usually to the rack itself, unless the seals leak.
