Steering rack prices (rip off)

So I had my overfinch in for a replacement intake manifold and service, £1200 all in. I knew I had an intermittent oil leak, one week it wouldn't leak the next it would though not much at all, slight spotting now and then. The Indy cleaned all the oil away and couldn't spot the leak but the week after he found it. It's coming from the steering rack, price quoted £2200 for a new one, turns out it's a land rover part only. I did some research and a company in Bristol does a reconditioned one for £325 new for old with a 3 year's warranty. £2200 seems rather excessive for a steering rack or is that LR just making a huge markup on spares? At that price i want it in gold with diamante encrusted joints and I want it delivered by a butler in a Rolls Royce and handed to the mechanic on a satin cushion. But joking aside, is that the real cost of a new steering rack? And does anyone have the part number for it please so I can double check? Mine is the 3.6 tdv8 2008. Though would I be right in thinking that steering racks are standard fitting throughout the L322 range?

Haylands answer is the one to follow, unless you have a specialist refurbishment company near you.

Unless you are seriously unlucky, you will NOT need a new rack.

Due to my background I have overhauled a couple of racks myself on my garage bench, if I can do it, it's not rocket science, to say the least. Whistle Basically new items to change are seals, 'O' rings, bearings, bushes etc.
Get a good Indy to remove it and send it for a refurb and refit Thumbs Up

No wonder we use the term 'main stealer' Censored

Had a similar issue when I bought a new to me 2010 322. New prices were mental, as I’d only had it 2 weeks, it was being covered by the ropey 2nd hand car dealer warranty which wouldn’t stretch to the huge expense main dealers wanted. I ended up with a remanufactured rack which iirc was around £700 ish plus fitting, which took it to just over a grand all in . Getting a remanufacture is money well saved as long as you have alternative means of transport. Think they are ZF units .

A Trap

Price is on par with other similar brands…. It’s not a corsa or escort. 2-3k for a rack is no surprise to me. This is a large luxury car, servicing and maintenance costs are similar to BMW, Mercedes etc.

Due to work commitments, no space at home or the inclination in overhauling it myself, refurbished is the way to go.

Still a hefty price to pay though for a steering rack, I thought a few hundred pounds, which would be inline with the car. I'm going to give Western power steering a call in Bristol, they have fantastic reviews.

Lion Automotive come highly recommended on the Disco forum for reconditioned steering racks.

It's probably worth giving them a call... https://www.lionautomotive.co.uk/ Kev

Thanks KN I've just sent them an email. See what they can do for me. Would I be right in thinking that new racks need to be programmed to the car?

I don't believe so. I think it's just a case of removing the old one and refitting the new one.

Lion have the L322 racks on their website @ £199. Kev

No a replacement rack doesn't need any programming.
Fit, fill with fluid, bleed & test & then forget / use as normal.

I was really lucky & got a good second hand rack via local RR breaker for £90 & was able to fit it myself. Paul,
