I can't get the positive clamp to tighten enough to grip the battery, is it an easy job to fit a new one?

The trouble is, the +ve clamp also incorporates something else (not sure what) and is a single piece to alternator and start motor, so not as simple as replacing it with an ordinary battery clamp. The replacement cable is part no. YMS500340 or LR012380. An expensive battery cable! I'm not sure it would be a good idea to graft clamp to the existing new cable - I'm sure it would be possible, but you'd want to be very careful about getting a very low-resistance joint because of the high currents involved.

You might be just as well served by taking a good look at the battery clamp itself. Sometimes the bolt that tightens it up has some stripped threads and can be replaced. Alternatively, a small amount of material from the point at which the two sides of the clamp meet could be removed to allow it to close up a fraction more. Or maybe a washer or two on the end of the bolt will effectively shorten it and allow it to tighten down more.

Otherwise, has some of the material from the +ve battery post been removed? It's lead, so much softer than the material of the clamp itself. If that's the case, it's probably new battery time - although on my lad's little Clio, I was able to find a 'cap' that slipped tight over the battery terminal and made it a bit bigger. That said, the currents involved on his Clio are tiny compared with our FFRRs. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

Does ithe cable have the battery disconnect unit on the later models which fires off after a crash ?

I was attempting to fit a new battery, so the post was ok.
I'll have a good look at the clamp like you suggest, I might be able to get another half turn out of it if I give it a good tidy up
That's all it should take for it to pinch up tight

Make sure it is pushed right down on the post. If it is even slightly up it won't tighten. John

As above, but if yOh are attempting to fit a bigger battery then some fettling is needed. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hold on there.... the Range Rover +ve terminal is an explosive coupling and part of the air bag (safety, not EAS) system. I would be very careful about removing it... for a kickoff it will be monitored and as such removal may throw up a fault with the airbag system... I would have a go at getting it to clamp up properly first...

As its a wedge type clamp, have you loosened the 10 mm nut and pushed it downwards, before seating the terminal and clamping it up again? If that doesn't work then a shim around the terminal should do the trick... I made one from a bit of copper pipe for a Landcruiser that refused to clamp up on the battery.... it worked very well  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

The +ve clamp has a box like thingy on it, and a couple of more wires.
I've tried tapping the clamp down with a rubber mallet, but still no joy

The box type thingy is the explosive type thingy as mentioned above by miggit and can be sensitive and throw an SRS fault.
It is the battery disconnect unit most likely

I've found this for the BMW... which is basically LR up to 2005, and Ford didn't change everything so I imagine that they are still these.

If you have not tried it....
Open up the clamp by inserting a wedge or screwdriver into the slot (upper pic above circled in yellow) A bit of twisting may be required.

This will enable the clamp to sit lower on the terminal and will allow for a little more tightening and better grip.
